Pretending to be ignorant at an AD

Stupid question but has anyone tried to play ignorant by requesting from an SA to take him / her through the Rolex models and what they can propose, pretending to not know models, as opposed to showing up and asking for specific models / professionals models and acting like they know the whole history of the brand?

That can show the customer doesn't care about reselling and maybe models other than busted down and smaller DJs can magically show up.

I think being honest with your intentions is best. At this point it is what it is, you can just say you are looking to start a relationship with a new AD.

I once sat 40 minutes at a key dealership and overheard the SA speak to 3 rounds of newcomers.

Newcomer 1: hello I want either Daytona or gmt master Pepsi
SA: -insert production issues here-

Newcomer 2: hello I want either gmt or Daytona or submariner green.
SA: -insert production issues here-

Newcomer 3: hello I want a Daytona on OF for my wife
SA: -insert production issues here + how soon do you need it-

They repeat themselves all the time. It’s all a script. They keep saying the same things because they get asked the same things. I personally enter an AD asking to have a look at something while they clean my watch. Playing dumb isn’t going to help you.

My son, my young son, he’s dying you see. He got Daytonatitus and only a SS black dial Daytona could save him. The doctors aren’t very confident. They tried grey market but it must come new with stickers from an AD. Those are the ways of karma it seems. If only somebody could help us.

I did the opposite. Wore my 16013 when shopping for a new DJ41 in 2019. Picked up my new watch a couple months later.

Interested to see where this goes. Can’t see it helping much but usually avoid mentioning anything about grey market prices, even when the SA brings it up. I have never gone grey but anyone interested in watches these days has an idea that the aftermarket prices are crazy. Not sure if they throw it out there to assess ‘flipper’ potential.

Your name would move up the list faster for a transplant than a Daytona.

Don’t think this would work well. I think demonstrating that you are passionate about the watch you want, that you have done your homework, etc. commands more respect than dropping in and just saying you want to buy a Rolex. SAs presumably sell watches because they have some level of interest in their product. (I’m sure that’s not the case universally, but would presume it is for a large majority.) By showing them that you, too, have interest in the product beyond market values and the crown logo, you develop a rapport with them that could be rewarding.

This whole scenario sounds like work. Watches are supposed to be fun.

Does anyone else love hearing people like Newcomer 1 and Newcomer 2 get shot down at ADs? I presume they are all looking to flip, and I must say it puts a smile on my face every time they realize they just wasted their time traveling to the AD.

It occurs to me, the scenario of going in and playing dumb might be what flippers would do. I talked to an SA at a new AD (for me), he was very knowledgeable about watches and seemed to appreciate I knew all about what craziness there is these days with Rolex. Subsequently he's trying to come up with something for me...

I must confess the schadenfreude is big. Especially those who look and dress in a certain way (think tiktok and the likes, in complete urban street wear regalia that screams “I listen to rap music while driving a leased German car loudly at night”.)

I do feel sorry when older folks come in and get shot down.

My SA doesn’t really know anything about watches. But she magically has what I’m looking for shortly after I buy jewelry for my wife.

I’m was sincere. I genuinely would like to know how they deal with this now.

I was on my conquest for my first Rolex in 2019 and the demand was high then. I literally got lectured at one AD in NJ.

Good idea asking while they clean. The question is, the AD I purchased from is in California, which I no longer live. Will an AD clean a watch regardless of where it was purchased?

I recently stopped into my new AD (I’m new to the market) looking for something for my wife, which was true. She asked if I was interested in any specific models for myself. I listed off a few, and she took notes. Within 2 weeks, she called with a YG Daytona that was mine for the taking. I jumped at the opportunity! Just a story that might answer your question.

Playing ignorant won’t work. ADs want to sell to enthusiasts or good customers..

"I suppose Rolex makes a pretty good watch, from what I've heard. I travel a lot for my job, you know, switching time zones a lot. I know this sounds strange, but does Rolex make a watch that shows multiple time zones? Is that even possible? I'm not much into gold, so the silver colored watches are more up my alley. I'm also a bit of an amateur cook, and need a watch that can help me time my pasta and my baked goods (I make a mean quiche). Any recommendations? I also like the color green. I was a big Sesame Street fan growing up, if you want to know the truth. What was the name of that green frog? Grover?"
