Should I buy it or not?
I entered the Rolex “world” only a couple of months ago and since then I’ve been addicted! By no means I’m an expert but I learned a lot about Rolex, luxury watches and it’s balue...... thanks to TRF sand its members
My 14 year old boy picked the habit from me and can tell movements in different Rolex models, knows the “lingo” and has been obsessed with Rolex He was with me over the weekend at the AD when I picked up my LVc and was mesmerized by the YM40 Blue dial. I’m thinking of buying it for him (without telling him) to give it to him for his graduation 1- before prices go up 2- before it gets discontinued (possibly) I raise my kids to earn what they get and appreciate what they have, not to get thing easily but this time I’m so tempted to get it even though my wife thinks this is “spoiling”. He is a very responsible young man and no where near spoiled! What would you guys do? Get it or let him work and Buy his first Rolex with his own money?

If you’re going to give it to him, do it now. His taste in watches may change in 3-4 yrs.

The idea itself sounds good, my only fear is that tastes keep changing and what he likes today might not like few years down the road. The ym is a great watch, I personally love it and was very close to buying it few times but I was always pushed back by the idea it is available and not the most popular so better focus on popular ones like Daytona and batman etc.
Also, in all honesty, the idea of passing my watches to my offspring sounds tempting from sentimental point of view, hence I prefer to give a watch the I wore, had memories with and my son grew seeing me wearing it so that he appreciates it as his look-up watch of his dad. Prices wise, the ym is one of the few rolexes that doesn't keep money at resale. Unlike the submariner and GMT etc. It will take some hit at resale. My thoughts, good luck with your decision |

If money isn’t a concern, that would be very cool. You will have to explain wearing and etiquette to him being at that age. Also, no polishing(just washing per Rolex instruction). I think it’s awesome.

Neither, sort of... As a dad with kids a little older than yours, I would set specific goals for him to achieve. Points for each achievement, make them attainable and measurable e.g. "SMART" goals. There are quite a number of key metrics and life events he will address between now and graduation which is the target gifting timeline. A few suggestions to get your thoughts going and dial in what will best benefit your son.
1. PSAT score 2. Volunteering with community service, giving to others. 3. GPA 4. SAT/ACT 5. Acceptance to College/University - will be known before graduating. 6. Fitness/Health goal to instill a lifelong habit e.g. runs 10k, martial arts 7. Doing something out of comfort zone to teach a sense of adventure 8. Zero speeding or driving w/o seatbelt infractions Best wishes. |

I don't think a 14 year old should be gifted such an expensive watch.
I would at least wait until he achieves an important milestone, like a graduation...and even then I would go with a less expensive watch. |

I'm sorry to be the contrarian but I would wait. Do what you will though.

I'll likely gift my child a Rolex upon graduation...but it'll have to be at least college. I don't see the point of having a luxury watch while in HS/college...you'll be looking for it to be lost/stolen.

I'd wait till he graduates, then take him to the Rolex store and let him pick one out. Then go for a beer together. Make it a moment to remember.

A YM? On a 14 yo? Even a responsible, mature one? I can't even imagine. Maybe a nice Christopher Ward or similar starter watch (I can't believe I just typed that) and invest the dough for some future purchase. Your investment will likely go up faster than the price of a YM. And tastes can change a LOT in a few years.

I would wait for collage graduation, either give them the one on your wrist or a new one at that time. Don't worry about models being discontinued, the latest and greatest version will be available

Definitely wait. I wouldn’t give my son a Rolex until college graduation and I’d either gift him one of mine or let him pick out his own. His tastes will change between now and then.

I’d wait till he graduated from college...I personally think a Rolex on someone that young could cause some issues with his peers now and possibly even more so in college.

University graduation. In the mean time make sure you are teaching him the things necessary to take care of himself 100%.

I would wait until he graduates. If he’s still enamored then, he will have earned it. But that’s my own value judgment and doesn’t have to be yours.

I would wait, and have him achieve a milestone like others have stated. I think college graduation is a great time. Just my thoughts.

Another no way suggestion. This isn’t a rare bird and you can get one when the time is appropriate.

If he's mature enough, then get it for him...
He's already shown an interest in the watch and the movements... Just sit him down and give him a heartfelt story to go along with watch, and he will cherish it forever...

Please wait until college graduation, an $11K watch on a high school or college student can be nothing but trouble down the road. Even for the most responsible and intelligent young man.

I do not have kids so take my advice lightly, but looking at my teenage/early 20's I'd say buy him a Seiko, Tudor BB 36 or something else that won't draw unwanted attention.
College/university, backpacking, sports, concerts, pub nights, other travels and the general stupid things that I did mean't I beat the **** out of my Seiko Riki Watanabe. I learned to appreciate it and watches in general in so many ways over the years before I purchased, and then inheritated other watches later on. |

x2! i'd wait till university graduation for a Rolex...it will either get lost or stolen or will attract the wrong kind of attention...especially on a university campus. Better to start with a tissot and let it grow from there. Plus, taste change dramatically in a few years...especially that of a 14 year old....who will continue to perpetually discover what they really like.

I would wait until he graduates from either college or graduate school, whichever will complete his formal education. Then let him pick out the SS Rolex he likes. For now, Seiko makes a lot of great looking, excellently constructed, and durable automatic watches for well under $500. To me, that would be a more appropriate middle school or high school graduation gift. It's a high quality timepiece that he can appreciate and admire but it's not the end of the world if it's damaged, lost, or stolen.

I think a black bay would be a fantastic and a little
More practical gift for a HS graduation. Save the Rolex for when he gets the framed piece of paper in his next chapter in life! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
