context goes a long way and no one cares anyway. Im sure tom or myself can be in a competition to see who has lost the most money. Tom is probably ahead

I sell my no longer worn IWC,Cartier, Breitling, PM Rolex, several Non hot SS Rolex, PM AP's, Other various non hot AP's,. etc, etc, etc and lose a ton. I sell my 5712 that i also no longer wear, and then im some greedy flipper.... ridiculous
Or forgetting that people sometimes paid a premium for certain pieces too. I wish I paid MSRP for some pieces I sold in the past...

I've sold a couple of pieces like the RG YM, CK2998, BB41, Lange 1, AP Jarno, AP 44mm SS, etc and definitely all lost money. Broke even on the 5164. I made small gains on a 116500 that I paid a huge premium for. CB and 15202 were alright, but sold when the premiums on them were relatively small. If I were aspiring to be a grey dealer, I'd be a pretty bad one, I'd go bankrupt pretty quickly.

By the same token what if you demand no one ever sells to a grey, whether you make a profit or a loss. What an infringement of personal liberty that would be, and what risks you would have to take selling privately, personal and financial.

So, in answer to the OP....you have an emphatic no from me. Grey dealers serve a vital purpose, both in buying and in selling. I am thankful that they are there.

And I’ll spend my hard earned money however I like, thank you.

Guys, I’m probably worse than Tom in terms of numbers of transactions. Wanna know what’s fun - trying to unload about 10 Grand Seikos over a few years before they were (semi) popular. And like all 42mm panerai, fuhgetaboutit. The losses more than offset(way) the +20k on my blue 5711. Btw I also sold a white 5711 for 19k and a 5167 for 15. Talk about regrets. Oh, and a few wg Rolex, brutal residuals. I could go on and on. ALS, humpf.

I have this constant discussion with my Rolex AD who talks about all the premiums on ss Rolex. I always counter with, I won’t sell my D5s for 20k as I’ll never get them again. It’s just unmarked gains that will never be monetized.

Been collecting for a decade. One of my biggest missteps was paying full MSRP for a JLC. Decided to sell it 3 months later. That was painful.

Then I went through an AP ROO phase. Owned a dozen of them through the years. 4 figure haircuts on all of them.

I sold a blue 15300 for $6,250 during the financial crisis.

I have no problems with greys. I get decent prices on pre owned PM Rolexes. Also easier for me to sell to them rather than selling on my own and deal with tire kickers. I haven’t bought any hot pieces over retail from a grey...yet. Only hot piece that I am considering is the AP Jumbo cause I don’t have a relationship with any AP Boutiques.

You already know I’m your partner in this endeavor.

Sold 5167 for 14500
Sold 5711 white for 20000
Sold 116710LN for 5500
Sold 15400 black for 10500

The list is much longer. People who don’t know shit assume flipping watches has always been some lucrative side job. quite the contrary it use to be my second most expensive hobby behind cars. Now I’d say it’s cost neutral.

Ooof... Fortunately I haven't really sold much. I am about to sell a watch to fund a jewelry purchase the wife made but I will have done quite well on it.

Prob is that if you have to buy an expensive strap model to get what you really want you will end up in the grey. No one had any problem with buying in the grey when it was 10-30% less than retail. The manufacture wised up and made it so that you want to buy at an AD and not pay the vig. Each person has to make their own decision. As for me I am tempted to just move on because the craziness is just too much for me. I am simply not a fan of strap watches. I even ditched my 5970 bec I don’t loke wearing a strap watch. It’s just not me. I don’t want to jump through 10,000 hoops to buy what I truly like. I am lucky enough that I still have two Nautiluses that I got when no one wanted them and like the song says...love the one you are with.
