Australia?
I may well have to relocate from London to Perth.
Of course, a consideration (maybe not the top one but one of them) is whether Australia is a good place to buy Patek watches (both in terms of price and availability). Singapore is also in the running, presumably that’s a good place? I wonder if one of you knows the answers? |

I'm in Sydney now on vacation. Just visited an AD called the Hour Glass. Very meager selection of Pateks, but had some nice FP Journe. They had some slow moving pieces. I asked "if the price was the price." They would not budge off retail.

Australia is hopeless for many things luxury.
Singapore would be a lot more fun than Perth but if you’re looking for a laid back easy going place, Perth cannot be beaten :)

Thank you. Are the list prices in Australia higher than in London?

There are many watches for sale in Perth and across Australia, unfortunately choices are limited outside of an AD. Your best bet is to visit Singapore or Japan if you want to purchase a watch outside of an AD (10x better if the seller is on rolexforums).

I doubt that London is cheaper than Australia given the currency

Australia would have a limited selection due to smaller market size (very small population there). My suggestion is try out HK, Singapore and Japan in that order.
Price wise, even if you did find a piece you wanted and applied for the GST refund (around 9% net refund, Australia’s version of the VAT) you’ll have to leave the country on a trip to quality and be cautious bringing it back into Aus. For all that trouble, you’re better of making a trip overseas to purchase and mail the box separately (as they will try to tax you for a purchase made overseas upon your return. Wear the watch. Mail the box.) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My understanding from my time here is that sourcing watches in oz is more challenging than other markets.

Well, don't move to Australia if watches is what you after?! Only few store, no competition and absolutely no stock of anything aside from few pearl masters and world timers. The watch game here totally sucks. Not to mention the Aussie dollar is tanking at the moment, so buying from O/S is too expensive.
In relation to Singapore, just came back about 6 weeks ago after spending a week in Singapore. Very similar outcome to Australia. Absolutely no desirable stock. Granted, lot more 2nd hand dealers with large selection but largely overpriced! |
