Would you buy a 1680 'red' with a dial like this?

The dial looks bad. From certain angles those large cracks are not visible, so its almost as if the surface of the cracks are uneven. I doubt anyone could restore this dial.

What do you guys think?

Thanks Scooba, i already moved on. I mean they say the dial is everything....but when the dial is toast...time to walk away.

I guess if it was a steal and you were buying it purely to wear and enjoy. Snag it cheap send the dial for a refinish and go along and just beat it up daily carefree. If you're looking at it as something to hold value/invest for future sale or trade move along and find a better starting point.

I dont think this will end up being cheap, thats my feeling. I would never trust a dial like that, even if its restored I would worry about those cracks showing up again. They are weak points.

You can get a red Luminova service dial. If this was cheap, I’d go that route. Obviously not as good as an original red sub but would be nice as a daily wear.

I would only consider if it was ridiculously cheap. Otherwise, hard pass.

12k USD, but even so, the dial just may not turn out well after a resto. Too risky if you ask me. Plus it has a 16613 bezel insert :P

At 12 k I'd be tempted. Check the serial numbers are correct for the dial. The case looks nice, renovating the dial would not be an option for me, I'd swap that insert first and keep an eye out for the correct dial. In days gone bye I'd really enjoy a project like this...

USD 12k is not exactly a bargain I'd say

I'd only buy this for low $1,000's.
The dial is gone 100%.
Rolex may (not 100% sure) have a luminova 'red' replacement dial, but then it's a different watch altogether and you will pay for a full service and dial too.

Yes if the dial has some minor moisture damage you might consider it right. Deep uneven cracks? no way. I havent seen damage like that before. its like it was soaked and then left in the sun for a few days to dry out.

Could they go to 7.5k??? I love this reference, so I would wear that one with pride.

But if it were to live in safe and be a 'collector piece' with little to no wrist time, pass.

I love destroyed dials though.

Also, and other experts need to chime in on this, looks like an amazing bezel insert.

Why do you keep saying that about the insert? That’s not correct.

$12k is a joke. If you wanted a project then maybe at half that, but I’d not advise you start here. Projects are not for those who operate in a vacuum of experience.

To answer the OP's question, it all depends on the price. This watch has taken a beating and it's price should reflect that. Would I buy it? Sure, for a deeply discounted price that accurately reflects its value. $12k, however, truly is a joke.

it actually sold for like 14k I think. it was on yahoo japan. I was just watchin it with my popcorn.

https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v634809334

whoever bought it must have a dial ready to throw in there.

Although that is a lot, if I recall correctly the Japanese market is heavily inflated in terms of price...

yeah I have seen bidding wars to end all bidding wars on yahoo. A Milgauss went for 30k last week, it was 2k up until the last few minutes.

Really surprised that none of the experts here knows a rare "San Andreas" dial when they see one. 150% premium minimum. Unpolished! Original date wheel!
