Looking For My First Vintage Watch. 5513?

Hi there. I've been looking for a 5513 for a little while now. I came across this one and wanted to get folks thoughts on it. It's a 1985 glossy dial variant that hasn't been polished.

Would be nice if hands were same color as the markers

Good observation. Is that because these are probably replacement or service hands?

Depending on the cost, the hands would be the biggest question. Although they can age differently than dial lume plots, those look too different to have not been restored or replaced.

Not a huge project, hands and a pearl and you're sitting pretty. It has it where it counts - dial & case are great.

Does the pearl look newer as well? I’m bad at spotting the color differences. This one is going for $10k with no box/papers.

The pearl looks like a replacement, but the bezel insert appears correct to me. I wouldn’t be concerned about that so much from a value perspective, unless it bugs you. I would ask the seller about the hands. Have then send a pic under UV light to see the reaction is different from hour plots, if they say they’re not re-lumed or replaced.

Looks like a nice example. It would not be too difficult to replace the hands or have them repaired/colored - after all, tritium wasn't made to last forever.

The glossy dial models are one of my favorite vintage, or classic if you prefer, 5513s. These early dials were prone to cracking on the surface and/or corroding around the markers. This dial seems to be in decent condition as well as the case.

Good luck with your endeavors.

Thanks for all the help guys. I was really into the watch and ready to pull to trigger, however the seller/shop has ghosted me ever since I requested photos of the movement, lume, etc. Back to the hunt!

My early 1990's 16610 has aged the same way. I am the original owner and the dial has slowly obtained a lovely patina whilst the hands have remaind white. I read somewhere this occurred due to the parts being produced by different manufacturers.

watch looks good. hands can be sourced but getting harder to do so.

the pearl actually looks original and looks like it has lost some of it's lume and has that "frosted look" that some tend to get. I have seen it many times.

I say if the price is right, why not? it looks great and if it's serviced properly will last you forever. I love a daily wearable old piece, they look great.

Stepford Wife=50's 60's 70's does it for me - personal preference , real character & warmth reserved for the tritium dial , acrylic crystal set
