Unicorn sighting today: Rolex Moonphase Padellone Gold

A colleague mentioned that she'd inherited a beautiful watch from her grandfather and that it was out for service. She brought it in to work today. Needless to say I wasn't expecting it to be a Padellone Moonphase 8171 in yellow gold originally purchased by her grandfather in the early 50's...

38mm in 1950 was a huge watch during those days.

Wow, That's beautiful and in lovely condition.
It's also great that it has been in her family since new.
Did she have any idea of what she had in her possession or did she just think it was a nice watch?

Yes

I think she knew it was special, but didn't know there were less than 1000 made and that only a subset of those were in yellow gold. That puts this on the very rare list. Perhaps fewer than 300 exist? Hard to say what has become of those original 1000 watches.

Thanks, That must have been a nice surprise for her although I'd imagine with it being her grandfathers watch she would probably intend to keep it. It is nice however to know what you have in the unfortunate event that you might need it.
I hope she has it correctly insured.

Her grandfather was an excellent caretaker for that watch, I'm sure it was expensive in it's day and that would have kept it that "special" category.

It would be interesting to know if she decides to keep it or if it's value will cause a decision that selling it is necessary.

That is one beautiful watch, wish we got to see the movement.

Really happy she met you and you can tell her the value. I would be very upset if she went down the street and got 4 grand from Bob's watches.
