I will be all over it in a nice way and ask to polish it. Its annoying specially if the scratch is from AD staffs. They should be more careful since these are luxury piece.

Sorry to see and hear - that shouldn’t happen. Either know how to do it and do it right or don’t do it. At this caliber of watch there should be minimal room for error. The scratches on your piece show an inexperienced person do the installation.

It’s an easy fix - so I wouldn’t loose sleep over it. I’d definitely make them aware and try to get them to remedy.

That is always a concern where no mention was made when the watch was picked up and left the store. I have started looking at my watch whenever I have a strap changed. But, they can still say that the mark was on there when they started to work on the watch. I have a 3796 which has a ding in the bezel I do not recall seeing before the strap was changed. I just let it go as I had left the store with the watch.

I have my AD change my straps but they know I am picky and even said “if you don’t think you can change it without scratching it. Then I will not chance it. You can have a week to change it if you take your time and do not damage a thing” and they have been great. They take the day and I get my unharmed watch back with a fresh strap.
I would of course complain if they returned with what happened to your.
Best of luck

Makes me want to puke that an AD could be so careless handling a Patek that way. You would think they would use an entire roll of masking tape before any adjustments are made to the watch.

I'd be more pissed they didn't bring it to your attention themselves AND offer to fix it. I've had things happen as a consumer (auto service, water line hit by service person, etc., but not this because I don't let an AD touch my watches) and if handled honorably by telling me, my response is always "things happen". I allow them to make it right and move on. If the AD handles millions of dollars of inventory daily and they're not honorable enough to own up to what amounts to a human mistake, I'd have nothing to do with the. Not cool.

I scratched the lugs on my Explorer II when I switched to a NATO. I returned the device and now have the local AD do it. So far, so good.

Hi all. I went back to the AD today - they apologised and are sending to Patek for a polish, free of charge.

what else are you getting? Moving you up on any lists? A simple polish would be unacceptable to me.

They confirmed with me that it will only be the marked areas which will be polished. They won’t be touching the bezel.

I never take any chances so I tape the lugs with electrical tape before handing it out (What they should be doing anyway).

Exactly the same thing happened to me! I brought it to their attention and they sent to Patek for polishing. I didn’t make a big deal out of it as mistakes happen...

Are the lugs on this sharp or rounded originally? I can't tell from the pics.

Hi all,

I picked my watch back up yesterday. Scratches are gone, but the lug which was polished hasn’t got the same sharpness it once had. See pics below to see what I mean (the non-rounded lug is a separate lug).

I’m sorry OP that you’re having to go through this. Something as simple as a strap sizing causing such a big headache. To be honest, this was my fear when you reported back that they were going to polish the affected area. Are you sure it was done officially by Patek or did they just do it in the back of the AD? Pretty quick turnaround if by Patek. Do you mind posting a couple more photos that are in more focus of the lugs at 12 o’clock? The current photos are a bit out of focus so I’m having trouble discerning the severity.

I had the same exact problem with a brand new Rolex with OF that was dinged by the official RSC. They polished it and overall it was okay, but not for a WIS. They eventually replaced the entire mid-case for after a six month wait.

You are in London. Why not go to the PP salon in New Bond Street and ask for an opinion?

If I were you and had more hair to pull out I would be bald!

Look’s worse to me, and one of the problems only polishing one area. It nearly happened to me but I turned down the free polish. If the whole watch is polished it’s hard to tell unless you do a side by side comparison with an unpolished one.

The term “polishing” is not a quick buff with metal polish. It is actually re-grinding and shaping usually by hand. The polisher probably did the best they could, polishing removes metal and you don’t need to remove much from the lugs before they lose shape. At 1200 (ultra fine grit) just touching the lug on the polishing wheel for 2 seconds will change the shape.

You will need the whole case polished to match, live with it or get a new case IMO.
