I still clip coupons, do all housework with the wife. We rarely eat out. We rent instead of paying for too much house (most people think we were crazy for selling our house to rent).

We analyze, measure, and track every dollar in and out of the household (or our “room” as some people say) to maximize our buying power. Doing so allows us some choice personal freedoms like a nice sweater, or a nice watch.

... drive a base model Toyota truck. No cruise control, no intermittent wipers, hand crank windows etc.
I call it the luxury of simplicity and reliability.

I get that.

But your initial premise "own a Rolex...yet I" is by definition defensive.

"I spend a lot of money on a status symbol watch, and yet I...." is defending your expensive purchase which I don't believe needs defending.

Just my opinion....YMMV

Some people may think we’re crazy buying a $5,000+ watch when they can be had for pennies on the dollar...the original thread from way back had the author saving his toothpick so he could use the other side...just a fun way to view our behaviors...

Take my watch off for nothing. I treat it the same as a $50 throw away watch.

You maybe not buying shoes, bags or diamonds. We all have a strange behavior in different ways. So long I can pay
my bills and have food on the table I will buy watches.

It’s because of these “behaviors” we may be able to purchase said watch

Agree but one could also argue that even though a Rolex is a status symbol it is also a very well made watch that can last a couple of lifetimes. So it could be viewed as a very well researched purchase.

Although probably the vast majority of people buy Rolexes as status symbol show off watches there are also lots of watches far more expensive that nobody in the public realm has even heard of. So there is almost no status symbol attached to it by most of the pubic and yet people still buy them because they love them. Some save for the grails and others buy on a whim.

So my argument to your initial premise is that most people have a "thing" that they get pleasure out of in their lives, be it family vacations, nice cars, music collections or musical instruments or whatever, and they really have no need to justify it to anyone. Humans are quirky beings.

No argument here from me.

My mechanical watch has a beating heart that fascinates me...and will very likely outlive me by many years.
