Thanks Mark for doing such a wonderful job at such a reasonable price. Nice to deal with someone honest in Rolex land. He has a nice blog here if people want to look over the basics.

Seems like you made the right choice. A competent watchmaker with reasonable costing like this is a good option if you have an older piece with personal history that you want to get serviced at a fair price.

I'm coming late to your post, but wanted to share my point of view anyway.

It really depends on how much value you put on your watch, but I think it goes beyond monetary value at this point. Here's an apples to oranges example but that illustrates my point well:

I also have a 20 years old watch that is in need of servicing, it is an inexpensive Swatch Automatic that my dad gave me in 1995 (watch is labeled 1993 on the dial) and he paid around $40 for it back then. Search does not service watches, they are meant to be worn out and discarded. The only company I could find that specifically services Swatch watches is located in a small town in the Netherlands, so I'm shipping my watch there in the following days to have it serviced. Between shipping, parts and labor the final cost will be over three times the price of the watch BACK THEN. It's still a small amount of money compared to a Rolex service, but financially does not make sense at all. I'll do it nonetheless because of the enormous sentimental value the watch has for me, In fact what makes me uneasy about it is the risk of shipping it, not the price of the service itself.

If your watch is 20 years old also, I'm willing to bet you have also some good memories attached to it.

Sorry for the rambling, going to bed now.

Well it has been over a year and my Rolex is ticking along like a charm. I was just thinking about my journey. Not sure how long this Rolex will last, but hope it lasts my lifetime. Time will tell. :)

If you ever do decide to replace your DJ dial for whatever reason, they can be had on the marketplace on this forum or the bay for $80-$150 dollars. Perfectly genuine and oftentimes in pristine condition. I bought a tapestry dial for my datejust for $120 and it changed the whole watch. But I guess having the same dial for 20 years, there's intrensic/emotional value attached to the face of the watch, too.

Glad you got it sorted out!

Well, I was just thinking about this great forum and felt I should give a shout back to you all. Here it is 2019. I wear my watch daily at a physical job with lots of movement. It is still keeping perfect time and everything is great. I enjoy Mark's blog and get his emails about watches and so-on. I am still a very happy camper. I am sure there are a lot of great watch repair folks out there, but I just felt a long history like I am posting could be of interest to some. Hope everyone is doing well and keep on ticking. He has been repairing watches since 1972. He can get parts that are required that are Rolex parts. Not all are needed depending on what the are. At least that is what I have been told. My watch is working great. I am very happy.

You might want to read the end of this thread at least. I had my Rolex serviced years ago and wanted to update the service history, to let people know how it worked out. I am very happy and my Rolex isn't in need of service at this time. Thanks though.

Well my watch isn't consistent anymore. It will keep time for a while and then stop. It needs serviced again, but it has only been 5 years since it went in. Keeping in mind this is an old Rolex. I have a few questions for you experts.

1. Is servicing a '70's Rolex a every 5 year thing?
2. If I change my face from a painted silver face to an original silver, will that let me go to a certified Rolex dealer without some big hassle?
3. Is it worth fixing? I love my old watch and miss it a lot because I have history with it and so many years. It is part of me and I want to keep it going, but maybe I should turn the page. Will it just keep breaking at this point?

I haven't called Mark about it yet. He is a nice guy, but part of me wants to correct the watch's face to a silver unpainted one. Not that easy to find at a reasonable price. I like silver with a gold crown for my watch. Haven't looked in a while.

I wanted to mention I do love a blue dial that has that nautical feel. I don't know where to look for an original and not painted. Not easy to look for to be honest.

It is an old watch so bear in mind a part that wasn’t replaced on the last service 5 years ago because it looked ok then could be starting to fail now. I would say try and source an original dial that you like the look of and get Mark to change it when he services the watch for you again. Did you get anything done to the bracelet last time you had the watch serviced - I can’t remember?

Thanks for the reply. The bracelet is okay. I watched a video supplied here and it works great now after just a slight bend of the clasp.

I am leaning towards blue, but I am not sure how you know if it an original or not. If it is a repaint, I might as well just keep mine. Blue would be fun. Now just to find the correct one. I like a darker blue, like the deep sea. :)

Love this dial! I would pay more for it.

Wow, real dials for my watch are about impossible to find. That nice Vignette Blue is not around at all really. Didn't find any real ones, just repaints like mine.

Sorry for just getting back into all of this and not knowing. I want to fix my old watch and wouldn't mind replacing the face with an original. Blue or silver. I would probably spend more than I lead on really. Especially for that nice Vignette Blue. Suggestions on a place that might have one?

Ah, just to put this to bed, I am heading up to Kane, PA and will just have my watch fixed. I wouldn't mind having a Vignette Blue face, but I was fishing. No answers, so I suspect no one on here has one. Looking forward to getting my watch back going.

Hope everyone has a nice holiday.

Got my Rolex back. Cost to fix and overhaul was $200. Works great so far, but he did warn me that my watch is over 50 years old. I have been wearing it daily for over 35 years. I am not sure how long they can keep going, but $200 every 5 years would certainly be fine.

Just wanted to update. Here is the place that fixed my watch.
