YM's aren't my cup of tea, but. . .
My local AD has a new stainless 40 mm YM in the 20% off case. It shook out to about $6,400 pre tax. Is this a good enough price to justify th investment for an eventual flip? I looked through the classifieds, but didn't see ant recent listings for a YM. Any experts out there? Thanks.

If you don't like the watch, then I say no. Buying a watch mainly because it appears to be a deal usually ends in disaster. The only exception would be if you can get something for more than 40+% off. Even then it would have to be a watch for which there is a market (ie I wouldn't buy a Panerai Ferrari even at 50% off). YMs are a fairly unpopular model. Bottomline is buy it if you like it only and are willing to lose a little in a resale.

I had a used YM for a little while. I didn't care at all for the polished center links. I was first attracted by the speckled platinum dial, but after wearing it for a little I noticed it was all too monotonous. Not to mention boats and yachts are no where in my life. I flipped it for a nice Sub LV.

Exactly!! YMs don't hold their resale value too well and you would lose on the resale.

That's the plan! :-) It is funny that the YM doesn't hold value the way some others do, including the much more available Sub. Either way, I find the YM to be the perfect compliment to the Sub, almost the "negative" of the black on black. I guess to the point of the thread, you don't buy a Rolex unless it's a crazy good deal to flip it, buy the watch you fall for and you can't go wrong. That being said, "everyone" has a Sub, you should see the looks the YM gets when people see it. -Pete

Although I have flipped I never buy a watch with a flip in mind. Much better to get the watch you want.

I've posted this before but it bears repeating - I think that the YM's depreciation is no worse than other more popular models of comparable price, with the exception of the Daytona.
For example, the TT Blue Sub (or Bluesy as it's known in TRF) which brand-new costs about the same as the S/S YM and is supposed to be one of Rolex's most popular watches, suffers almost exactly the same depreciation in the secondhand market. So IMO it is wrong to compare the YM's depreciation with the S/S Sub because they command very different prices. Much better to compare watches in the same price bracket to get the right picture. |

Low $5000.00s now
i would buy lightly used for nearly $1500.00 cheaper than your brand new at AD one. Other posters are right, they don't hold there value as well as others.

I would not buy the Yachtmaster or any new Rolex with the intent to flip anytime in the near future. I would however buy the Yachtmaster to wear and enjoy. I have the SS/Plat Yachtmaster and YG Yachtmaster II and love them both. They are also the only two Rolex watches that I own.

I did not like the YM for years till last year then a recovered the beauty off this watch.
What also a spoke to me are the smooth edges of the case and de solid centre/middle links. Before my love for the YM i always was hooked on Sub date and EX2.
