Both watches are basically the same with cosmetic differences, I thought. Why is the Sub waterproof to 300M and the YM to only 100M?

As far as I know the Yachtmaster has a Twinlock crown and the Sub has the Triplock. This may not account for the 200M diff, but I'm sure it has alot to do with it.

The new GMT Master II has the Triplock crown and I believe the water resistance will be similar to the Submariner even though it is not being advertised.

Sorry The Mole but fullsize YM have the TripLock crown.
The Sub and YM is build the same way so I will say the YM
is good for 300 meters even if Rolex only rate it at 100 meters.
The reason is YM is not a diver watch and Rolex only rate the
diver watches 300 meters or more.

My gold YM with white dial is a full size and looks like the crown locks exactly like my Serti Sub - TT . My guess was also that the YM is not considered a diver's watch and that was the only reason it was not rated for 300M.....hmmmm.................................... .......

The caseback on the diving watches (Sub and SD) are thicker. The cases are similar, the crystal (except the SD), bezel, and tube/crown are similar. The only difference is the caseback. Apparently, the caseback is significant in water resistance as the caseback gets thicker as the water rating increases. Look at the caseback difference between the 100M (Datejust, GMT, Yachtmaster), 300M (Sub), and 1000M (SD) watches. The casebacks become thicker as the depth rating increases.
