Buying from auction ?

Wondered if anyone has bought online from an auction house such as Sotherbys or other respected auctioneer ?

Was watching two Speedmasters last week - an Apollo XI 30th anniversary model (Tranquility base inscription) and a Galaxy Express 999 model - both looked in great condition with all boxes and papers and sold eventually for CHF2,200 (EUR1,900 / GBP1,700 / US$2,200).

On top of this was a 20% buyers premium plus 7% sales tax.

Was specifically interested in the Apollo XI edition.

But is this a good deal and are there any pitfalls to be aware of buying from an online auction house ?

If possible go and view the watch in person or get someone to view it for you. Sometimes the photos aren’t great at showing the true condition. You can request further photos of the watch you are interested in which they normally put on there website but then all the other potential buyers get to see the same photos.

I would not buy from an auction house as I would not pay the buyers premium. There are so many reputable dealers out there that except for the watches like the Paul Newman Daytona you can find what you want.
