Which Patek would you pass down?
Saw a post today and was looking at my collection and was wondering which Patek I would end up passing down to my son if I had to choose 1. Or which watches I would pass down in general.
I guess it seems there are 2 criteria: 1) The watch itself - is it a classic that will not go out of style? It is worth passing down? 2) What significant events has the watch accompanied you on. I feel that the prime candidate(s) would be your daily wearer (Daytona / 1680 red / FPJ CB) or the watch that you wear for important events and presentations (3970 or 5711r). What say you? Or is there a grail watch yet to be purchased and passed down? |

I think the daily wearer will have more significance since they probably have memories of you wearing it which makes the watch a lot more sticky in their minds than one that seldom was seen and could possibly be flipped by the recipient

I'll definitely be passing down all of them to my daughter once I've passed away.

I like that you save the 5711R for presentations, as I'm going to wear mine tomorrow while I pop into the mall and present myself to a Whopper with Cheese.

In my opinion far too much is made of watches being heirlooms. It’s just an excuse used to spend excessively on man jewelry

Im considering not to pass down any. It's for them to make their own path and create their own life.

I would be happy to receive any watch pass down from my father, be it the humblest or the ugliest watch. It's all about the happy memories whenever we put on/look at his timepiece that matters.

Also I'd make him sign a contract saying he can't sell them. They have to remain in the family 'estate' for ever and ever, and that he needs to hand it down to his favorite successor / son / daughter / newphew AND make them sign the contract as well, and make it a loop. So that these watches will be around for a thousand years.

surely it depends on your financial situation when your older, as you might have to sell to survive etc

For me, the watch that gets the most wrist time is the most significant one.

A couple of options come to mind ...
1. A watch from your son's or daughter's birth year, wear the hell out of it for as many years as possible, to create your own provenance. Then pass it down 2. A watch that has already been in your family for more than a generation at least, find out as many stories from your elders about it, add more of your own stories. Then pass it down Just my 2 cents ;-) |

Ive chosen a different path than that of the Pattek slogan... “you never really own a Patek...”
I may be different than most in the sense, i think sharing the experience of chasing the watches is what I will be passing on. The watches and material goods obviously gets passed but the memories are not something we can pass on. My kid will remember the first time she walked in to look at the movement in the moon watch, the first time she learned about genta, the skip hour movement at bulgari, the recent tiffany brunch and the time Daddy took her out of school to meet Mr Stern (upcoming ). So i will be passing on the memories. The watches will just be there to remind her of the fun we had. I dont think it needs to be expensive. Her first watch was a casio g-shock. |
