In a vacuum, where cost and prestige play no role, I'd take this Hodinkee release. Screw down pushers on a chronograph are the most annoying watch feature ever. "Oh hey, this would be awesome to time....wait....wait...let me unscrew these pushers first. Give me a second. Don't start yet."

Also, the 116500 is decently illegible (especially the black dial).

I was actually just faced with this decision on whether to buy a 2020 Olympic Speedmaster or take that money and put it towards a Daytona, I chose Daytona lol.

This, but one Speedmaster is enough for me, just as one Daytona is enough for me. I would take a Daytona over this particular watch but I would take a standard sapphire sandwich Speedmaster over a Daytona.

I’ve had quite a few Daytona’s.

I admit I bought into the hype. And it sure is a pretty watch, in any iteration.

But poor visibility, weak lume, extremely cluttered dial, lack of date, and screw down pushers have me wondering how it has ever reached its current status.

The only Daytona I’d want now is the WG version on OF. But I had it and sold it. I don’t miss it.

I like this new speedy. But I’m starting to lean towards wacky, fun designs as I’m realizing that previously I’ve just rotated between quite a few watches that essentially look super similar.

It's nice to know.
I've never owned a Daytona because i don't have a relationship with any ADs and I'm not willing to pay grey market price.

I often tell myself that the most desirable thing about it is the hype, and all the downsides you mentioned are things that would bother me.

Helps ease my mind a little hearing your feedback as somebody who's been there and done it.

Compared to the original ref 35.20.53.00

It is clearly a homage for this watch, the original is a chronograph, triple date cal 1151, based on the Valjoux 7751 without the moon phase.
Sub dials at 12-9-6 while the H10 are at 3-6-9. The yellow tip of the chronograph second hand “airplane” shape, in the H10, is taken from the date hand in the old one.

I prefer the original, you can get one in good condition at circa $2000. Unless with the new HODINKEE now sold out, we will see the old one price increase.

I also suspect the days of getting the original one for $2k are fading fast. I think current owners should pay royalties to Hodinkee when they sell.

2. They missed out on a watch that holds tremendous sentimental value for Benjamin Clymer.

I think "Speedy Tuesday" will take on a whole new meaning for that lucky 500.
Well done

, not a fan of this release.

That reminds me of a hooptie constructed of multiple body panels from a junkyard or two.

I think the price increase for the original is all but guaranteed after this Hodinkee release.

let's just put aside the hodinkee LE for a moment and focus on the classic speedy in general.

How does it stack up to the 116500? Relatively speaking, very well, especially when you take into account the price point. You get a lot of watch for the money. The speedy has an amazing history and brand behind it. It also looks incredible and is extremely classy and classic.

Do I also feel those things for the Daytona? Yes, of course, but for more than twice the retail price, and 7 times the market value I almost feel like the speedy needs to be in the conversation.

As for this Hodinkee LE, I don't care for it much. However, I think if you can manage to get one and you like it, it's a great buy. At 500 pieces it's truly limited IMO.

Why has TRF not adopted a "like" option, and the ability to reference/tag members... there's no need for me to repost this... but ..

I'm just so happy I'm not the only one...

wait, i can't tell if #1 is a joke. i know 500 pieces is truly limited and special, and i know that a LE of 500 is rare. but omega produced what, 4 LE speedy in the past year?

haha ok

i asked because I actually think if you like the watch, at 500 pieces its a must have. but obviously Omega has a different perspective on what "limited" means in general

Lol, they certainly do. If I had to pick a LE for them to do, it most certainly would not have been that one.

FWIW, I do love Speedmasters, but my Speedy Pro scratches that itch.

I’ve tried to like this but can’t quite get there. Must be a generational thing. Looks like it will pair well with cargo shorts and crocks...

Interesting comment... Why 'Try' to like something? It is their job to make something that sings to you, and is something you are willing to pay your money to have... not something you feel you should buy because it's limited or a "good investment"...

if you didn't like this, don't like it, you shouldn't try to like it... you don't owe it anything...

Daytona 116500 versus HODINKEE 10th Anniversary Speedmaster

Too colorful, just fine with my FOIS

A product of hard work and focused effort deserves some attempt on my part to understand what the creators were trying to achieve. I failed.
