Need help in identifying this 6610 dial
Hello All,
My friend and I are looking at 6610 watches and we came across this dial which is basically out of the ordinary for most 6610 we see on the internet, non-gilt, no chapter ring and has a "T SWISS T" above the 6 o' clock. Is this a service dial? We can't seem to find any documentation on it. Perhaps some fellow members with knowledge can enlighten? Thanks |

The dial's no good me thinks ....
AFAIK all 6610 dials had the OCC text with the SCOC text not seen until the 1016 came on the scene.
And even if it's a service dial - do they exist ? - it should still have the OCC text. A standard 1016 dial ( if that's what you have there ) won't fit a 6610 either cos. The dial feet are in the wrong position. So, you may be looking at a 1016 dial doctored to fit the 6610 or perhaps it's an odd-ball dial. ( refinished ?). I'm not familiar enough with 1016's to tell if that's a good 1016 dial but I'm fairly confident it's not correct for a 6610 |

Yes Paul, we couldn't find any documentation on this dial apart that it is looks similar to a 1016. This is however sold as a 6610.
We found another here, full set. Really odd. BTW these are the only 2 examples so far. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-Explor...p2047675.l2557 |

I'm dubious ....
I've seen a couple of 6610s with SCOC dials pop up for sale in recent years - with claims of "all original".
Possible I guess that as 6610s morphed into the 1016, a very late 6610 might have been fitted up with an SCOC dial. Does the serial number place the watch at the absolute tail end of the 6610 production run ? Would be interesting too to see the back of the dial - are there signs that the locating pins have been moved, but would Rolex do that ? They did odd things in the old days like crossing out case-back numbers and re-stamping them, so never say never I guess. I'm thinking too that while the 1030 movement was chronometer rated, it was the 15xx movements that Rolex deemed to be 'Superlative'. In essence, that was a boast that the new movements were a notch better than their earlier chronometer movements. If I'm correct on that, the 1030 is not a Superlative movement. Our learned friend RWT has a splendid 6610 - he may know if there was indeed odd dial-case-movement matches in the late 6610 days. A 6610 with an SCOC dial is a watch that will always need explaining, that's not a watch I'd want to own. |
