Curious: what makes the markers and hands yellow?

or turns orange in some cases? some say sunlight?...some say darkness?
anyone?

No one knows 100 percent, but the general consensus is that sunlight lightens tritium and darkness and time darkens it. You also have many other factors, such as humidity, heat/cold, different chemical reactions based on different mixtures and batches of tritium used through the years, etc ....

That's probably the best explanation. I suppose light or lack thereof plays a part in whether tritium ages lighter or darker but it probably is the result of time and the exposure to air. Plastic can be prone to the same thing, yellow over time. I'm looking at my "beige" smoke detectors now that used to be white and thinking it might be time for new ones.
