I'm almost positive this was at the High Line Standard Hotel. I was walking on the High Line and passed under the hotel - you could see into this conference room and see a few slides of the presentation (a few vintage Daytona's).

Either that or there was another watch conference in NYC that weekend...

Why all the hate? Because it wasn't accessible to those of us who don't want to shell out 3500 bucks? Funny coming from a group whose enthused about watches that's not accessible to the vast majority of the population.

Did they charge you tax on the $3500?

Looks like it was quite a success! Good for them! I do hope that events like this become a little more accessible to the "average" watch enthusiast, but until then I guess the hodinkee recap article will have to do for me. I am a little sad that the article did not share more of the knowledge/expertise of the speakers, but I guess that is what the attendees paid the big bucks for.

Why should they charge $3500 bucks? IMO, that's completely ludicrous. For what? But if they can get it, more power to them...

A sarcastic comment (and a funny one) that's essentially true, no? I think the common perception of Hodinkee is that it's merely a resource for the watch collector/enthusiast. It is, but only partially. Its platform, its very nature, is pure MBA. There's nothing wrong with that - that it was primarily about the money all along - it's our own misreading of Hodinkee in the first place that is kind of pathetic. Now that the message is so obviously "in your face" a lot of readers are feeling repulsed. Hey, understand it for what it is; even in a different light it remains a valuable and entertaining resource, IMO.

Why do people ask for any price for anything? Because there's generally an audience that's willing to pay x amount.

It's the exact same question people perpetually ask of us who collect higher end watches.

I do agree, sadly. Nowadays the "Talking Watches" series is the only thing I like in that site.

Ben took the risk to leave what seems to be have been a stable well-paying job to go back to school, study journalism and live his passion.

If he manages to live well off it (and it seems he does), then good for him. I would not say he went in for the money though... Dealing would have been a better bet I believe.

Their summit was a joke IMHO. $3500 for what?!?

I'm in NY and regularly attend various watch events etc. I've even been to Hodinkee when they hosted an open house at their offices with Vintage Rolex Forum: free drinks and $0 cost Go figure. Oh and IWJG was going on at the same time so scores of notable dealers and collectors were there.

Here's my issue with it:

Why such a cost? It takes it out of the realm of reason. I could go to Geneva for a weekend for that type of cash.

They claim it was a not for profit event. The #'s don't add up.

As Hodinkee would say: Value Proposition

'Tis true. I'd rather use that to buy a nice KAWS or Murakami print, or some vinyl limited edition toys by KAWS. Not sure I'd hear or learn anything new at the event. At least, nothing I can't figure out myself or learn online for free somewhere. But, I'm a pain in the butt, as people already know... LOL

So was it a not for profit event? If they touted it as such, and it was, great for them.

If it was for profit, and they filled the seats, great for them.
