What do people mean by Vintage?

Hello,

I am new here but I have been reading the forum on and off. I'm looking to buy a pre-owned Rolex from a guy I met. It is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual from 2015 for about $4,100, it has box and paper and still under warranty. I understand that I cannot call it a "Vintage" watch. It is in perfect condition, assuming it is a real one ;)
Now, I also have the option to buy almost the same watch but from the year 2000 for about the same price from a vintage store.

Which one should I go for? Why are the prices so close to each other? The one from 2000 is overpriced I assume?

Thank you for your help!

I would go with the modern one. The modern one offers the 5 year factory Rolex warranty which will give you piece of mind. Unless you can get the so called 'vintage' one for less. I wouldn't even touch that vintage one. The vintage no longer has a warranty and they're asking way too much for it, by the way.

I dont think of vintage as anything newer than about 1989 and the 80s would be gray area for vintage

A watch from 2000 isn't vintage. Its second hand. Get the newer one. No question.

The term "vintage" means different things to different people...you'll never reach a consensus. Many side with the Anything-Over-30 Years notion.
Regarding your second question, it's difficult to give an opinion without actually seeing the two watches in question (or even pics) but between the two, as you described the situation, I'd opt for the newer model.

My watchmaker considers a Rolex vintage if it is a 1979 or earlier. IMHO, you need to have extensive knowledge before you purchase a vintage watch and would personally would leave that to the experts unless you are simply keeping the watch and are not worried about resale value.

I believe you will have less risk purchasing a newer watch

id agree ,,, plastic is vintage , sapphire is modern ,,,
buying modern just buy the newest cleanest most complete you can find , and in both cases

buy the seller.

If you are willing to spend 4k have a look at DJ too. Don't rush buying, read, have a
look at different models and differences.

Am I allowed to post a picture of the watch I want to buy on this thread to know if it is real or fake or should I post in the "Watch out" section only?
