Trying to age a 5513

Hi everyone,

I'm new here just trying to age my 5513 Submariner which I just had serviced and I'm thrilled with how it has come up.

I'm hoping someone can help. It was my fathers and I'm not too sure when he bought it but I believe it could have been early 80's?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Very nice watch. If you remove the bracelet you can read the serial number which will help date it. You can search the forums for some of the parts of even post it here to this thread. When you do, post in in this manner. 123XXXX

Looks like a MkIV dial to me, so somewhere around 81'ish would be my guess

Welcome to TRF? The first three digits or the serial number would give you a range of when it was produced.

Ha, when I read the title I misunderstood, was expecting to see recommendations for time and oven temperature to make that white lume a nice mellow yellow. Yes, serial number's the thing.

The dial looks to be a Mk3 maxi dial and if original to the watch would likely put it around 1977 or 1978.

Doesn't look like a maxi dial to me I thought the strokes of the f and t had to be in line apologies if I'm mistaken

Thank you everyone for the information. 1978 through to 1981 seems to be the period I always thought. I've had it since 1989 when my father passed away, he had it on when he died in an accident so I've been reluctant to get it fixed/serviced, but I found a repairer who kept it original and fixed it beautifully.

This place is amazing, I love the passion out there for this brand. There are so few products in the world that age like this, I've had people already ask me 'when did you get the new watch'! And 'that's such a great looking modern sports watch'

The serial is #604XXXX which was quoted to me from the Rolex repairer,

A matte dial 5512 or 5513 with the Submariner text above the depth rating is a maxi dial. This is the case with maxi dials mk2 thru mk5. The maxi mk1 has the Submariner text below the depth rating.

If you look at the alignment of the text and how the hour markers are touching the hash marks below you will see it's a mk3.

This might help a bit:
www.5513mattedial.com

There will be a huge update soon on the site to include the gilt/gloss 5512 from 1959 to 1966.

With your header being "Trying to age a 5513" I thought you were going to ask how bleach your insert!

The serial no would make it a 79.

The dial is a Maxi 3 aka "Lollipop", which is period correct. The watch itself is quite desirable and I have one myself.

That looks perfect. Sorry to hear about your father but you have a stunning machine around your wrist to at least remember him by.

Thank you, the repairer was very, very excited about it which is what has prompted me to look into it further.

Thanks again for the information everyone

Very nice 5513 maxi dial mkIII .. consistent with the serial 6.0 (about '79)
Maybe inside the clasp you'll read VC codes
