Speedy Tuesday: Boom or Bust?

What are your thoughts on how this will do in the secondary market? Will it be a sought after limited edition similar to the snoopy or will it flop like various other limited editions have done?

I confess that I very much like the look of this watch. But it seems expensive for what it is and the inscription on the caseback and association with social media is just cheesy. Thanks.

Buy what you like....but I think it should hold value pretty well with a killer design and under 2000 limited number. It's the only modern speedy I've seen that even gets the vintage guys out of bed. My vote is boom.

Based on a six hour sell out that shunned west coasters I'd say there is a long line of orders that didn't get filled. I know I learned about this six days later and had no chance. I think it holds strong for sure. so, boom

Only time will tell. I like the design and the fact that it sold out in a few hours tells me there are many that want it.

I am hoping the leather strap is nicer then it looks. I would love to wear it on a great vintage style strap.

Problem is the the subdials now look all jammed together. Not really a speedy fan so there you have it.

With all the big social media watch guys buying it I'm sure it will be and remain popular and create a hype on the used market.

The leather strap appears to be crap.... It will look good on a quality vintage style strap though.

Yes, could be.

I have "reserved" one, just not entirely convinced yet..... it's odd.

I have a few thoughts on this one.

First and foremost, it is the coolest modern Speedy I've seen since the Mitsukoshi (sorry, not a fan of the Snoopy editions). I love the brushed case, the radial subdials, the reverse panda dial. They nailed it!

Second, people keep talking about how it "sold out" in a few hours. It didn't. In fact they have not sold a single one yet, as far as I know. It was simply "reserved out", and those reservations involved no commitment, monetary or otherwise. I'm not saying this to diminish the desirability of the piece, I just don't think it is a good barometer for the market's demand for it.

All that being said, based on the fact that the ST has many design features that Speedmaster enthusiasts love, and that it is a limited edition, I think that it will in fact be a success and its value on the secondary market will be strong.

If we forget about the ties to social media for a moment and simply evaluate the watch, it's still a big winner. Aesthetics in construction make this model completely unique compared to any other Speedy out there. Reverse panda, brushed case, radial subdials, ect are not found elsewhere in the Speedmaster lineage similar to this package.

Add to the above the immense popularity of the Speedy within the WIS community, very fast reserve exhaustion, those of us residing on the west coast couldn't even get a shot a reserving one, and the popularity of the social media...easy boom market.

As a US west coast person, whom didn't have a chance, I would like there to be a number of people that pass on the watch so I can get pulled up from the wait list. However, I'm less than optimistic. That means looking at the secondary market for me. Ergo, my vote that this is a boom runs contrary to my own self interest.

Good, very good thoughts here; thank you . Like I said above, putting aside all of the marketing hype and other nonsense, I do very much like the watch. I have a essentially become a vintage rolex and modern patek collector, and this ST has caught my attention big time.

I could have lived without the cheesy inscription on the back and the terrible leather and nato strap accessories... but oh well.

I just took a look at your instagram page, wow... With your collection, why even bother with the speedy. I would never wear it.

I hope the pictures of the leather strap are not accurate. It looks like vinyl, not supple at all

Agreed. The straps look like they belong in the bin... but there are plenty of great vintage watch straps around.

I read somewhere that Fratello Watches themselves said there are over 6000 people on the waitlist for this watch. So even if none of the people with reservations pick-up their watch, it would still sell-out if just 1/3 of the people on the waitlist pick them up.

Few things in life are ever certain, but I'd bet good money that this watch will increase in value, and I'm not even a gambler! To me, the looks of this watch will appeal to the general luxury watch buyer much more than the Snoopy, which I think only watch enthusiasts or speedy fans appreciate. 2012 pieces for that market is not very much.

Interesting. I had not heard that 6000 figure before. Best

Boom. The reps at the Omega dealer where I'm picking mine up said they have a waitlist of 10 people that want one and are willing to do just about anything to get one. That said, I'm keeping mine. Ps. I don't think anyone getting one of these cares about the straps. Most people I know waiting on one of these, already has a plan for something else. Best.
