Eating at Queen Chow's (haunted) restaurant

Haha , they've combined the pub / bar scene with Chinese restaurant called Queen chows , kind of unusual but ...

Let's check this place out eeeeek

Walk in and we are greeted by a goat's head Mounted onto wooden doors , quite dimly lit

Walk up the narrow flight of stairs

It's kinda creepy :)

Half way up we come up to this lopsided giant mirror , hang on is that a reflection of a B..r, nah just my imagination

I'm trying to figure out the theme of this place , maybe it's Wild West

Cool bar

you can drink absinthe cocktails in a dark, library-like bar called the Smelly Goat, or keep your shades on at a table on the steamy tropical terrace During the day

Now let's eat !

dim sum master Eric Koh made these dumplings!

His prawn/shrimp har gau are luminous, the skins fine and the prawns chunky; his scallop and prawn siu mai are the height of luxury, and his deep-fried ham sui gok , dumbed down as "footballs" on the menu, are glutinously golden and almost green with garlic chives.

Good start!

Fried salt n pepper squid

Deep-fried salt and pepper squid with prawns and silken tofu is a different kettle of fish, flash-fried and tossed in a rubble of fried garlic and chilli, the discs of silken tofu

Ok let get to the good stuff

Black market Angus beef , baby king oyster mushrooms , potato

The beef was surprisingly melt-in-your-mouthy even though it looked like it was going to be your stock standard chewy beef cubes. the potato was crisp on the outside and fluffy soft in the middle and I even had to have one or two bits of spring onion because it was coated in such a moreish sauce with hits of black pepper. The rest of us were also fighting for remnants of the king oyster mushroom, definitely wish there were more. Vegetables and mushrooms are such great vessels to carry flavourful sauces.

And some greens , gotta have some greens on the side

The hallmark of a good fried rice in my opinion is for it to still look white in appearance rather than oily and golden while still bearing a good flavour profile.

Some seafood

Moreton bay bugs, kombu butter , asparagus , tosaka seaweed

Bugs always make me so happy, when they’re of the (regular) eating variety. These were well cooked however the true stand out had to be the sauce, the kombu butter, that was just crazy umami and decadent.

And finally the Roast Duck in plum sauce , cooked in a traditional upright oven

Queen Chow’s take on a long time favourite roast meat features insanely crispy duck skin with very succulent meat that was just lightly blushing pink. Definitely one of the better ducks I’ve had around Sydney.

It was nice eating Queen Chow , but the portions where a bit small on certain dishes , and a bit on the $ side , but all in all a great experience!

7.5/10

Oh look , some Lyre bird feathers

this Aussie bird can mimick all other birds , and other sounds including machinery , look it up ;)
