Hodinkee Collectors' Summit

Love Hodinkee for its great content, especially the video series.

I'm curious whether anyone here has made application for an invitation to their "Collectors' Summit." The cost is rather steep ($3,500), or as they put it, "less than half the cost of a decent matte dial Sub."

Yeah, but food and drinks are included! I guess it's like a convention fee, but that's way too much. Should be $350. I'm in New York, and I'd like to go, but I'd rather buy another watch for that money.

I'm pretty sure that contrary to Hodinkee's claim, the entry fee all but ensures that only the wealthiest collectors will be in attendance.

Looks to be a great event! I would love to know how many applications they receive and ultimately accept...

I suspect the panelists/speakers will be comprised in large part of high end vintage dealers. If so, this seems to be (without saying it) a way to match up wealthy collectors (i.e. "clients") with high-end dealers.

What's interesting is that, ordinarily, it would be the dealers who would need to pay for the privilege of meeting top-end customers (i.e. advertising, marketing etc.), but here it is the reverse-- That is, the customers will be paying to meet the retailers. Quite amazing actually.

And, Hodinkee basically collects a "finders fee" of $350,000, less expenses (event space + food), for putting them together, and gets a list of the most well-heeled collectors which is quite a valuable piece of information.

Hodinkee has really jumped the shark of late, imo. their articles have gone way downhill; everything they write now is basically reads like an ad for the company selling the watch.

I am sure it will be a fun time for those folks that attend. I enjoy GTG's you meet others, see cool watches, and maybe buy something you wanted.

Now if anybody's a collector in the Tampa ,Florida area me and my friends (a few other serious collectors, rolex watch makers, dealers etc) are thinking about a GTG. We have been tossing it the air for some time actually. There used to be one that was great but it hasn't happened in a while. Me and my friends have been collecting vintage rolex for over 25 years and we have tons of knowledge and some nice watches. This will be a not for profit event if and when we have it. If there is any interest pm me and we can try and put one on.

I bet you wont find a single person attending this event. Lets keep this thread alive to see if anyone is going. Its a PR thing and HYPE, no one is actually going to pay $3500 for this, wealthy collector, dealer or otherwise.

In my opinion, if you have the money to blow $3,500 on something like this, you probably already (or at least should) have enough connections in the industry/community that this is asinine.

The way I see it, Hodinkee had a decent idea and completely flopped with their elitist angle they put on it.
