On that note I'd like to share with you my experience which led to me finding and following this forum, and apologies in advance if it's long winded.

A few years back I was fortunate enough to meet the love of my life and will be a lucky man in April when I will get to call her my wife. We're both surgery residents in a busy city so we're short on time and shorter on money, but we have each other, our health, fulfilling jobs and the love and support of family and friends. In short, we've got everything in the world to be thankful for and don't go for want of anything.

Both of our sets of parents come from very humble beginnings and have been able to build a successful life here, which is a story I imagine many of you can relate to. In her family's tradition, any new addition to the family is given a watch as a gift. Her family is fond of Rolex and all of them have one. I was told that I'd be getting one too and they wanted me to decide which one I wanted. I was obviously taken aback by this and never expected or anticipated a gift like this, but long story short I ultimately decided on the SubC no date, both because of the simple classic look but mainly because it was the least expensive of the submariners (they wanted to buy new and I didn't know much). They wanted to go to their AD with me to go get it and when we got there, unfortunately there were no no dates in stock but they'd probably get it in the next week. No big deal right? Not to my mother in law. She wanted to make sure I walked out with one on my wrist that day.

They had a SubC date and she asked if I wanted that instead. I was ok to wait for the less expensive one, but didn't want to be disrespectful and say that outright. Instead I hedged and said that I preferred one with no cyclops. So what does my insanely awesome mother in law do? She points to the SD4k and says "How about this one? No cyclops AND has the date. Best of both worlds." She had me try it on and it fit like it was meant to be. Before I could backtrack and put up a fight she told the AD that it's the one we want and i ended up walking out with that beauty on my wrist.

I got to say, prior to this I had always thought that a nice watch is just that: a nice watch. Now I've come to realize that sometimes it can represent much more.

When I look at it I can't help but be filled with all sorts of emotions:

Humbled by the family I am going to be a part of and where they've come from to be in a position to allow their children to fulfill their dreams.

A sense of overwhelming pride to have my fiancé by my side, who is the best thing to happen in my life and with whom no obstacle is too big

Hopeful of the family we are making and the road ahead. A home filled with love and support for one another. A piece of our family's story to be passed on to our children and grandchildren

Further ambition to keep working hard and putting in the hours to one day be able to be of means to buy my son/daughter and their future wives/husbands a rolex of their own.

To some it may be "just a watch," but to me it feels like so much more

Hope you all wear your's in good health and looking forward to following this forum for some time to come

Really great story. Very happy for you. Wear the SD4K, which I consider the best modern sport Rolex, in good health with your new family!

Welcome and thank you for sharing your story. Reminds me of what my mother did for my wife before we got married. She was welcomed into our family with a Datejust 79174 to match my 16234.

Congrats on the SD 4K too.

Well done and welcome to the forum, keep the love of your life and the family high, as much as we love our watches they are a piece of metal that tells the time, it is the emotion that has real value.
