First Post + First Watch

I am 43 years old and I never wore watches. I decided to embark on a journey to seek out the perfect watch for me. I started with various watches and I ended up shortlisting it to two. The Rolex Daytona and the Omega Speedmaster Professional. I decided on the Omega for various reasons: NASA History, Classic Chronograph and I loved the presentation box. I passed on the Rolex because the cost was almost 3x and the availability was limited (long wait-list).

The decision then was which version of the Speedmaster Professional to get. So I looked at both of them online in detail. Read all the reviews. I also went to an Omega Authorized Dealer to see both up close and personal. At 6'1 190 LBS and 6.75" wrist, I was concerned the watch would be slightly too big. After seeing them and trying them, by initial thought was true, the solid back with the hesalite crystal was the only choice for me.

The last part was, where to buy it and how much should I spend. I narrowed it down to CH Jewelers (San Jose, CA) and Jomashop (online). The OTD price online was $3,350 and the OTD price at the dealer was $5,725. I ended up negotiating with the dealer and got the watch OTD for $4,380 (+free VIP Valet Parking for life).

Great choice and welcome to TRF.

This is a dangerous site if you hope to remain a one watch man.

Speedy Pro was my first "nice" watch. It is the history and the balance of the dial that does it for me. A friend of mine just received one as a gift. When he showed it to me, I found myself admiring it like I had never seen one before. Just classic and perfect in my opinion. Congratulations!

Perfect choice. Looks good on bracelet and tons of strap options. Built my small collection around this piece. Regarding size, my experience is that speedy wears smaller on strap, especially black leather.

Congratulations on a fine choice. Welcome to the forum. BTW, that bit about being a one watch man.....save it for the wife. I predict that within so short a period of time as make your head spin you will find yourself with a collection. We know the symptoms. You now care about watches. You will notice the cool watch that someone else is wearing. It is fun to talk watches. Ringing any bells?
