Very cool. I thought the 116619 was the first WG Sub. Neat.

I can see why they only made three of them. Hideous. Neat story, though.

The sad part about this watch is that it looks like something you'd see on Craigslist or eBay with a story along the lines of "My grandfather gave this to me"

It's cool because it's so rare and a unique part of Rolex history, but wow, that thing is ugly!

I have been looking around for a WG 1680 since I saw this a few weeks ago. I think it is an amazing watch. I would have dropped a chunk, had I found one. I thought the smurf was the first WG sub.

Foolish me, the article says only 2 blues and 1 black. No wonder I have never seen it before.

Seriously, I love this watch.

Dang.

Rolex could introduce that watch tomorrow, say it was available in limited numbers, and everyone would run to an AD with cash in hand ! Then start threads bragging about how they were able to get on "the list".

A 20 page argument would then begin about some cheesy new name for it !

I guess I'm in the extreme minority, but, I find the 70s vibe to be pretty cool, and special, too, for a WG piece.

That is one cool watch. No idea it even existed, but I have wondered about the Rolex origins of the 116619, now we know. Thanks for sharing the article.
