This design should never have made it off the drawing board. This is way below Rolex's standards. If they absolutely felt compelled to see the design in the flesh, they should have made the three, looked them over, and then immediately destroyed them.

I actually find this pretty cool as a design study and I don't think it's ugly at all. It's a relatively radical departure from what we've come to expect from Rolex in terms of design (it also feels a bit like a Rolex parts bin watch with a bark president bracelet and a bezel that feels kind of Thunderbird-ish to me) so there's a little cognitive dissonance going on here...and to some that in and of itself might be offend. I'd love to have this piece in my collection.

This watch was a prototype. It wasn't intended for mass production. The reason it fetched $$$ is due to sheer novelty and rarity.
