Need help, sell gold GMT Master II for PP Aquanaut Time Travel 5164a?

Hello,

I have a very lovely Rolex GMT-Master II in gold and at the time of purchase it was my grail. It's an amazing watch and the feeling of gold on your wrist is indescribable. However, I only wear it when I have long sleeves on (8 months out of the year). I am uncomfortable wearing it with shorts sleeves here in NYC. My other watch is the SS Daytona Ceramic black dial.

I never really considered the move to PP mainly b/c the ones I wanted were too expensive. I always admired the Time Travel from afar when I'd see it online, but never even considered buying. Then today out of no where I got the bug and am not sure what to do.

Note, I've also never seen the watch in person, let alone tried one on. Given I live in NYC, I plan on going to the Diamond District to see if I like it on my wrist.

While both watches are GMT's, they are completely different in "wearability" and in my opinion world's apart. The main thing my GMT has going for it is that it's gold and looks amazing (many consider it to be the best looking gold Rolex). The problem is I can only wear it under certain conditions. I love to travel abroad and have been to 20+ countries but that shouldn't be the reason I get the PP.

As you can see, I'm torn right now and would love to get your thoughts!

I am not a huge fan of the 5164 and I cant carry off all gold watches....have you thought of perhaps a Rubber B that makes it more 116655?? cheers

Personally, the 5164A is not something that has previously interested me. But have to admit that the "R" looks good.

Would you have to see the Rolex GMT to help fund the 5164R?

Have you considered keeping the GMT and getting another piece to compliment it?
That could be worn on the other occasions.

Both nice watches it really come down to choice, the Rolex will be a lit more sturdy if you put some load on your watches.

Add the PP and see how the chemistry is. You can sell either easily.

I would love to change it for either 5167R or 5164R, but not really for 5164A, Karl's either of putting it on rubber B is quite a good idea, more discreet and should bring much less attention than a full gold, but if you want a SS Patek I would go for 5711/12, same price or less than the 5164, but more watch for me, only you can decide

Wow that is a great pic of the 5164 - maybe best pic I've seen!

I can understand your temptation! However.... would you really wear it for travelling abroad? Such high value and of course Gold sticks out like a sore thumb

I was on the fence for a long time about the 5164. I recently bought one and it is one of my favorite watches. It has the perfect size and thickness. It is under the radar unlike your gold Rolex. Only you will notice the fine details.

I would not do the trade for the PP unless it is a grail watch and it sounds like it is just an option. If you research the market for the Rolex GMT in YG you will see how soft it is right now. I believe that you will have to add a decent amount of cash to move to the PP. For the difference in cash you could find an nice SS Rolex, Tudor or Omega that would be more under the radar for those time that you feel like you need it. You would then have a great three watch line-up. I have owned the YG GMT that you have and it is a great watch. I prefer Submariners so I flipped it. For the money no one does PM bracelet watches better than Rolex in my opinion. Keep what you got and look at alternatives.

I am a huge fan of the 5164 in every metal. Whenever I do not know what watch to wear, this is my go to. It is a well made watch that wears like a cloud on the wrist.

Best of luck in your decision.

If this is possible, for sure the best option! I'm a big fan of Rolex PM and had the YG GMTc too, but I'd swap it for the 5164R or even the A, love this watch. If I wasn't looking at the new WG Daytona or that doesn't work out I think I might add one.

I have moved from the gmt II (steel) to the 5164a to the 5164r. Both the steel and the rose gold variants of the 5164 are wonderful. Highly recommend

Of course because it's the 5164R, not the 5164A, the photo is of the R but the OP said the A, if you are talking about R then yes do it, both R aquas look amazing, A are nice but don't think worth the trade plus cash

Gold for gold. If you are tired of Rolex, go for the 5164 in Gold. Mechanical complication is sexy.

If you want low key go SS or WG on either watch.

I agree with a lot of what's said here. Personally I would never have bought a gold GMT (possible exception is the BLRO) and would have got the 5164 from the start. Now that you have the GMT I'd think twice about selling for a big loss. What about keeping what you have and adding a 5167? Not dual time but still a great travel watch - slim, light, under the radar and rubber strap.

I bought it brand new for a great price and would not take a "big loss" on it at all. At the time I bought it the 5164A was not even on my radar. I probably didn't even know about it.

I tried on the rose gold version today. I like it but I couldn't get a real feel for it b/c the strap is not sized and I would want the SS version. It's still hard to make a decision at this point.
