Please comment: Deciding on 1st & only watch

Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase my first real luxury watch and have a budget of $3k to $4k. I've done a whole heap of research and believe I have narrowed my selections down to the following watches below. I'm a younger male, just shy of 30 years old and would be using this watch as an every day, all occasion watch. Hence the fact that I just want to buy one good watch that will serve all of my needs; Whether it be in the office, on the job site, in the ocean or outdoors.

Prospects:

- 16234 Rolex Datejust White Roman (1990's I believe I can get within this price range)

- Rolex Explorer I (1990's or Early 2000's) - 36mm seems more in my price range but 39mm is preferred

- Tudor Black Bay (Brand New w/ Box & Papers)

- Omega SMP Man on the Moon (Brand New w/ Box & Papers)

Thanks for any comments, advice and or recommendations

Me personally, I'd go for the 16234 Rolex Datejust White Roman on Jubilee. Very classic look! Tough as nails!

My father has one since the 80's, wore it regularly, and never serviced it until LY. In fact, it was still running fine, I just felt sorry for it, so I had it serviced.

All fine watches; get the one that you like the most and don't worry about other's tastes.

Get a Rolex. Whichever you like best that you can afford. Datejust or Explorer I would be great first Rolex.

Platinum Yacht-master 16622 you can find for $4500. This is a great choice and it can be worn with any attire. I love this watch and you can get the blue dial or silver dial. This watch is monochromic and very beautiful piece also it has the maxi dial

This is exactly what I would do. The OP39 seems perfect for you.

Or since you're also open to Omega, maybe an AquaTerra.

Our of your choices, I'd go with the 16234 DJ.

Something else to consider -- your price range puts a 16570 Explorer II within reach, if you are willing to forgo the box and papers. You get excellent value for the money: 40mm watch, sport model, date complication w/ cyclops, GMT hand. The black dial one is very versatile and would perfect for a one-Rolex collection IMO.

Saw this combo here on the forum. Really gets me on the "I want a blue Pelagos" bandwagon. It meets your budget criteria and has a great look, in-house movement and warranty!

For your only watch and something that can do it all, I vote Explorer. The Speedy is a close second but it's not first because it's not the best swimming watch. The Explorer for me.

I agree with Mike on this. My second choice would be the explorer. If you can stretch your budget a used 214270 is 4600-5000 (this would be my first choice except for your budget). I LOVE the speedmaster but wouldn't want it as a one and only.

1. Rhodium OP39
2. Explorer 214270
3. Black bay

Speedmaster or Explorer I. As a younger guy myself, either of these are great and very versatile pieces to have.

I would cross out the 36 Explorer right away, as you say you'd prefer the 39.

That leaves you with three pretty different choices. Up to you....

Just to add to the mix, and as mentioned above, a Speedy could be a good option. So classic, great looking, great range of strap options.

Thank you all! I'm very appreciative that their is such a following and community I can get advice from. Looks like maybe I have a little more saving to do as the OP39 and the Explorer II would seem to be ther better choices for my lifestyle. I agree with many that the SMP is classy but worry about the water resistance in comparison the the two listed above.

Speedy in hesalite. A beautiful, classic watch. Use the chrono hand as a date too. But pick up a cheap g-shock for the swimming and rough stuff, and a tube of poly watch!

The explorer I 39 would be the perfect watch! Of all my watches that I have, the explorer I is by far the watch which has the most wrist time. I also have the regular SPM Pro that's sitting in my drawer. I only rotate my 3 rolexes.

Completely agree with this. Not a bad price on this one, but you can probably do better here if you keep your eyes open:

Best of luck and if you spend any amount of time on this forum, I'd make a small wager this will not be your "1st and only" - bunch of enablers here

If undecided, never buy new but get pre-owned instead just in case you need to sell it later, you got get hit much.

I agree with this one. The Explorer II was my first Rolex. Perfect for every day and every situation.
