Some great advice when looking on Ebay...

Some wisdom from member "Sub-Zero" from another post...I pm'd him and asked if he'd mind if I began a thread with this info as I was impressed....great learning opportunity for all...Be careful out there!

I'm new to this forum but I've sold a few watches on ebay. I've also bought a few there without any trouble.
You have to contact the seller and get his/her phone number and call them. You can tell if they are legit most of the time. Of course, feedback is key. If they have a ton of feedback for selling baseball cards and all of a sudden they're selling a Rolex, be careful and find out why they are selling it. Could be their personal watch or a scammer that has several accounts being groomed with 'good' feedback.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing.
If the Datejust has a plastic crystal, it's an older one, sapphire was on newer ones.
Also, many places 'upgrade' an older watch with diamond bezels and dials - probably real diamonds but not original Rolex.
Many dials start life as genuine rolex dials and someone adds diamond markers.
Still a Rolex dial but with aftermarket diamonds.

You need to ask the seller:
Is this a Genuine Rolex diamond dial or aftermarket?
If it's aftermarket, is the dial an upgraded Rolex dial?
What is the Color/clarity of the diamonds? (that's a whole other discussion)
What's the serial number series or age of the watch.

Be aware that the older Datejusts use an older movement and they are not quickset. In other words, to change the date, you gotta go around the dial several times.
A newer datejust will have a quickset movement like the 3135 movement. This lets you pull the crown out half-way to set the date 'quickly'.

Datejusts with Jubilee bracelets are easily stretched on the older models so ask how much stretch there is on it. The Tutones are more prone to stretch.

Just remember, it may be cheap for a reason, even if it's a Rolex.

Good Luck!
