Go on a Rolex forum and ask that kind of question? You gotta be kidding. Of all the important models from all the most revered brands that you can buy any kind of product from the Rolex Submariner is as revered, beloved, respected, valued, cherished copied and deservedly so as any product you can choose to own. Money in the bank. A gold brick. Reliable, solid and transferable for cash in a pinch. Legible, indestructible, valuable, respected AND it glows in the dark. If you don't own a dog it's your best friend. If you do own a dog it's jealous. Come on.

I'd say it's underrated... I'm just glad I made the decision to purchase mine when I did, and at msrp, before the mad dash hit. I remember walking into the AD and leering at it, then taking a few days to think it over and wondering whether or not it would be a decision I would regret. Boy was I wrong...

I have 2 Daytonas and they are great, a Nautilus which is class and classic but if I was on a desert Island with one watch it would be my Sub all day long!

Not "overrated." But certainly overpriced at grey market prices if you're just looking at the watch. There isn't much setting the Sub apart from many other divers in that price range. Seamaster, Blancpain, high-end Seiko Marine Masters or Grand Seikos come to mind. They're all great watches, but the Submariner had the little crown on it. At the moment, my favorite diver out there is the Seamaster Diver 300. I'm particularly a fan of the lugs and the wave dial. Right now, the only diver I own is a Sinn U1, which is arguably a "tougher" watch than any of them, but there's a clear difference in quality (even as a Sinn fanboy I admit that).

It would be overrated if it was new and all hype. This is a proven staple to the brand. Probably the most rolex of all rolexes. I'll add that not everyone can pull off the sub. I had one and didn't look good on me. When it does work, as good as a watch can get.

The real gauge of whether it's over/under rated is MSRP...
If you raised the price 20% would you lose a commensurate amount of sales volume such that total sales dollars are equal to or less than the current level? Absolutely not. You could probably raise it 50% without seeing any decline in sales volume. Obviously some of that is supply constraint related, but you're essentially asking about demand, and I think you could likely increase the price 25% or more and ALSO increase production by a fair amount without having any pieces go unsold. I don't know exactly where on the curve you'd fall, but I think that idea alone, if you'd agree with it (which some may not), suggests that it's at bare minimum not over rated. Let the market decide what ratings are for something- otherwise you're just arbitrarily measuring it against something else with your own view of the correct criteria. |

I am 36 and just purchased my first a couple months ago. I didn’t know I wanted one until I was 11. Whatever age you get your dream watch is a monumental one. Congratulations, I also smile every time I look at mine. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

No - the dial choices and simplicity is great for many generations. It makes this a timeless piece and will always be a beautiful piece of art.

One of the best watch designs of all time and still the best looking watch Rolex makes. Quality-wise it's on par with anything in its price range.

I think it’s possible that the SeaQ of Fifty Fathoms are better “on paper” and/or one could prefer them over the Sub, while still not making the Sub overrated. Rather, I think that would make the SeaQ and others *underrated.*
