Tourneau - Please Don’t Touch My Watch

I’m generally puzzled by this behavior at Tourneau.

I ask to view a watch, I place mine into the tray. While I try the watch, the SA continuously picks up and puts down my watch.

Every Tourneau SA does this and in a way that is very similar and deliberately so.

What gives?

Ive had this although not a Torneau, Ive assumed the SA was checking it was real and thus serious in buying the watch i was looking at.

Interesting, they've never touched my watch once I set it down to try on something at Tourneau. I have had an experience where some one else tried to pick up my watch when I was at the Rolex Boutique on 5th Ave. Both the SA and I looked at the person, and I grabbed him by the wrist to stop him.

I just leave my current watch on and use my "non-watch" wrist to try on new watches.

Is it not more likely these guys are just showing an interest in what you’re wearing, or at the very least pretending they’re interested?

It’s psychology.

You have the opportunity to touch a new one and they remove the old one so you can more easily visualize life with your new one.

They also likely over-compliment it and then follow with ‘it’s beautiful. You know, we have buyers looking for these now.’

Maybe it depends on the watch if they’ve never seen it before

That is a major faux pas and certainly a sign of a inexperienced sales associate so that should send up warning flags.
I certainly would have asked why you are handling my Rolex? The watches you are trying on are store merchandise and not the SA personal property so there is no comparison.
I have had only one owner ask if he may look at my watch in this situation and we were talking watches for 30 minutes by then. He just wanted to see a new Rolex release at the time. I had no problem since he asked. I don’t like anyone touching my watches or cars.

This has happened to me in more than one AD. It doesn’t bother me so much, other than when they put my watch down flat (dial side up). I don’t lay my watch flat to avoid unnecessary metal on metal contact with the bracelet/clasp and the caseback.

I think it’s because the SA are in the habit of laying them flat, because the watches they handle daily are fully stickered.

I've gotten this over the years with my 116520, since most SAs have said they haven't seen one before or it's been a while at least since they have seen one. They really seem excited about it, especially now with the "shortage". I just wear my 116610 now when heading to ADs, but even those aren't seen quite as often now and seem to get a lot of attention from staff. Most have been kind enough to ask if it is ok to handle though first. And not just Tourneau, but many ADs I've seen this.

Sort of an odd behavior.

Sometimes I simply transfer "my" watch temporarily to the other arm while I try on the store's watch. That let's me evaluate it on my "wearing" arm, and has two other advantages:

A) No one can pick up / mess with my watch (especially another no-boundaries idiot customer)

and

B) I can move my other arm over to side-by-side compare how they look on my arm.

Yes!

This sort of thing would really frost me if done to my Pelagos LHD with the numbered case back. I take great pains to avoid getting that area scratched and place a cloth between there when storing.

Amusingly, I could not care less, though, about the rest of the watch obtaining normal wear and tear.

Thankfully, I keep my watch on and try theirs on my free wrist. I most definitely would not like anyone picking up/touching my watch.

Because of scarcity of stock they want to feel what a Rolex feels like .

I think they’re just trying to look impressed with the watch and compliment on it to drive a sale.

In my local AD I placed my ND Sub down on the tray beside two watches I was interested in buying in order to compare and contrast. Certainly helps make up my mind.

SA handled the watches for sale, whilst wearing gloves, but went nowhere near mine. This is what I would expect from any SA.

I couldn't care less if they did. It's not like they are going to steal it or throw it against the wall...

We are reaching a new low in AD SA relations..lol

First it was being condescending upon being tested by underdressing to test the SA.

Second it was they are talking to us TOO MUCH and trying to SELL US watches.

Third it was the SA don't seem to care about watches and won't chat with us about nerdy things.

Fourth, it was the diet coke wasn't cold.

NOW they are touching our watches when we try on their stock...sure...ok

Doesn’t bother me at all.....it has happened several times.
Even been asked if they can try my watch on.

I don’t think this is a Tourneau behavior at all.

Especially from a crowd that pride ourselves of “we don’t care about scratches on our Rolexes because these are tool watches and scratches add personality to them.”

I put mine in my pocket, then try on theirs if I'm inclined to do so.

Usually if watch shopping I have no need to put it on, since the bracelet will not fit and I would never do up the strap.

Are they shaking it? Or tossing it in the air and snatching it? If all they're doing is handling it I don't see an issue. I normally put mine down on it's side and they will put it back down flat, but even still I don't get upset about it. Watches are meant to be worn, handled and appreciated so I don't see any problem with this.
