Is the Submariner overrated?

Yeah. Hard to say. I can’t believe the prices these days and I’m glad I bought the watches I needed years and years ago.

During two combat deployments to Afghanistan I saw and worked with several people that wore Submariners. They were treated as part of their load outs, just another piece of gear that was relied upon to complete the task at hand. If their Submariners can survive the gamut from training and HAHO jumps to IED explosions I'd say they are far from overrated.

I’d do a modern black exp2 or vintage 5d sub but no way I’d wear ceramic anything in a milspec situation.

In fact, I’d actually wear a Seiko Turtle to be completely honest. No need giving a prize to an enemy combatant should things go south.

Hahahahaha Did several tours in AFG with my 14060. Contrary to popular belief, the watch didn’t instantly disintegrate the moment we touched down on JBAD.

Are you serious?

Of course not. If I went through SERE I’d have to be in some shape of non-round and would likely have more self discipline.

But I do come from a military family. I know it doesn’t seem like it but, yes.

Everyone has a Sub? I scoff at that statement. You must hang around a different group of people then I encounter on a daily basis. And I see hundreds of people a day. And I'm always scanning wrists in airports around the country. Rarely do I see a Submariner or Rolex. And congrats to all our deployed personnel wearing Submariners and GMTs like our brothers did in Vietnam. A ray of hope!

We also shouldn't hate on the 50 Fathoms. It came out at almost the exact same time as the Submariner back in the 1952ish I believe. It deserves its spot as one of the top diving watches.

The outbound tourist volumes just from China itself for instance has meant that luxury brand stores whether in Paris or Vegas or SFO see hordes of Asian shoppers that clean out inventory. Couple all those factors with the inorganic demand or scarcity, giving rise to premiums. To the OP’s question, I don’t believe the Sub is overrated, but I also don’t believe it justifies a premium.

Not overrated. It's a simple reference for sure but extremely durable and reliable and maintains resale value if you tire of it and want a different watch. Very easy to sell it, also will last lifetimes if you want to keep it and pass it on.

To the OP’s question, I don’t believe the Sub is overrated, but I also don’t believe it justifies a premium.

I would also include two other factors: (1) the sale of the Paul Newman Daytona-I think that is where it set in about Rolex as an investment; (2) Apple Watch-I really think the Apple watch is an underrated factor, I think it got people into watches that were not normally into them and that lead to an increase in buying in the Swiss luxury pieces, Rolex in particular.

It's all about personal perception and choice.

There is no doubt that the Submariner or Submariner Date are incredibly good watches, with an enviable following across the globe.

But they are not everyone's choice, and that is what is great about owning watches, we all have a view on what we like or don't like and can spend our money how we choose.

My diver is a 10 year old Omega Seamaster Diver, its great does everything I need of it so getting a Rolex Sub in any form isn't on my want's list at this moment in time.

But other people, have vintage versions, not so vintage, new and not so new and in many different colours, and can't get enough of them.

So is the Submariner overrated, yes if you don't like the watch, no if you love it.

Never listen to someone's else's opinion just do your own thing, remember YouTubers have to be controversial otherwise no one watches the videos.

The question itself proves that the Sub is not over rated, with a hard try at comparing other attempts to the King. There are those that suffer from reverse snobbery that dis anything nice, and there are those who don't own one who justify their lack of ownership, and there are those whose life mission is to put down others, but there are way to many of us who know the truth. I own a sub, my father owned a sub, my son wants my sub.

Oris is great, I have one. Theyre not better than a sub. Glashutte, eh, idk. At any rate, if a watch is better than the Sub that doesn't make the Sub overrated. It is one of the most iconic watches of all time for good reason.
