AD staff buying pieces themselves to flip

Wonder if anyone is aware of AD staff buying high demand pieces themselves (or selling to a friend) so they can flip on the grey market.

prob the easiest way ever to make $10k in 1 hour!!

Do store owners have restrictions in place to prevent this??

If I worked for an AD I’d consider that a reasonable perk.

All ADs have a sideline where do you think the grey market stock comes from?

Too many unworn watches are for sale online for things like this not to be occurring somewhere. Helps explain why the lists are so long.

Exactly. The AD that does not do it is the AD that delivers its customers their watches in very decent waiting times.

I don't think employees can purchase them at will in most ADs, maybe one hot piece after x number of years of service? Guess most of them do not even know what the owners have in the safes.

I have a panda model with paperwork bearing the name of the manager of a popular AD chain. Go figure!

You have to get to the manager and flip him because they typically do the allocations of hot models if not the owner.

My one SA that I actually trust told me that they are allowed one watch at his AD... regardless of how long you’ve worked there or which model but only one! He’s worked there 15+ years and told me he’s waiting for the PM Rootbeer!

If I was an AD sales person I would 10000000000000% do that.

Why not? Its a free $10k

There is check and balances in big ADs - the manager and sales executive need to be in cahoots to make it work.

Most AD's are not stupid enough to let a retail sales person flip watches to the sales persons benefit. Most AD's have a sales manager that makes the call on the allocation pieces or even the owner making the call. No AD is going to risk their relationship with Rolex for a few bucks, that is incredibly short sighted. I do think that some AD's are fooled by people posing as whales that then turn around and flip the watch. The smart ones have trained their sales people to ferret these people out and move them along. That has been my experience.

The AD's i know allocate pieces like these by the top folk of the AD before it gets to the Sales Manager let alone rep. Also considering how much money is on the table for this sort of stuff wouldn't shock me in the slightest if it's backdoored for their gain. They won't have this opportunity forever and they need to make as much money as they can while they can. I can't blame them as annoying as it is.

I heard a tale that an AD in my area is no longer a Rolex dealer because of exactly this. I called them to make a repair and they said Rolex had too many demands on them. They said Rolex demanded they build something in their store and they said that was the last straw. A few months later someone told me Rolex gave them the boot because someone was buying the hot models and flipping them.

I don’t think they do that. I’ve been told the sales manager is the one that distributes the time pieces to their employees to sell to their clients. I can see if a loyal salesperson has been with the company for years, he might be able to get an opportunity to buy a watch that is in demand.

I have been told, at my AD the sales associates go outside their dealerships to get the hot watches for them. Owner doesn’t sell to them those. They go to clients.

The better plan is to sell it to someone who will return it and now that AD can sell it used for whatever he wants.

When money is involved there is always something dodgy happening especially in hyped markets like we currently have in the watch game.

I can definitely see a scenario where this is happening. When some pieces are going double msrp and it seems very few of us are getting them msrp from an AD...

Like these folk don't make a tonne of money they are acting very rationally if they are working out ways to sell the pieces at market value. Hate it but it is what it is.

It has happened at a very reputable AD in Dubai, where then sales associates were some how buying the SS pieces through fake customers and then selling it for a premium. They got busted eventually. All fired.
