What do people think of those explorers

Folks,
I have been wearing my Explorer ref 114270 for about 3 weeks now, I am quite surprise that no one really comment or noticed my watch till now besides one friend who asked me if it's a real Rolex. Also he asked it with a tone that I thought maybe he surprised that Rolex looks like that. I wanted to ask you guys, what is your experience with people commenting on your watch or noticing your watch? Is it different with other models? Thanks.

The Explorer is a pretty subtle model to begin with, so I’m not surprised that you don’t get many people commenting on it. Also, I’ve found most non-WIS just don’t look at a wrist the same way we do... Enjoy your Explorer.

No one ever comments on my watches, and I have been collecting for 17 years. I really don’t care because I wear my watches because I like them.

Absolutely guys don't get me wrong, if I wanted to make impression explorer isn't the watch for it. I am just a bit surprised that people don't see it as very "Rolexy" looking...

I doubt if most (95+ percentile) people even notice watches let alone brand recognition.
Watches are a personal joy for us- in all these years (10+), not one person has commented on my watch. And that’s just fine with me- after all, I’m the person I bought the watch for.

Chaps

The value of Explorers is that they really are below the radar. Anyone who wears a big chunky gold watch is hoping that people will notice it and that is the great divide between the many groups of Rolex owners.

Truth. The watches I wear are for my own use and enjoyment.

If you do notice someone looking at your watch, they're probably just trying to see what time it is.

From two meters away it looks like any other stainless steel, black dial wrist watch.

I can see a Rolex from across the room; usually it's a Seiko or some other imitation. Unless people are WISs they probably won't notice and if they do they likely won't say anything. As far as the Explorer is concerned, it's a great watch!!!

I always get a little discouraged at the replies to these topics. Just cause an OP asked a question, people seem to give automated self-righteous responses implying the OP’s intentions... (rant over)

To your point, I owned the Explorer and I agree that most people don’t notice watches - even worse for new Rolex owners (or those looking for some wrist attention) the Explorer is the least noticeable of the bunch. Due to the lack of anti-reflective coating and the simplicity of the watch, I felt like the face was lost in the light at most angles. Only thing left recognizable was the bracelet. Understated to say the least. I really do get the charm of the explorer and I eventually want one back. However, I get more enjoyment out of the sub as a one and only (which is hardly noticed as well).

Though it is also very rare, I have received more compliments on my Snowflake then any Rolex I have owned.

There is no way to know how many people actually notice your watch.

Women notice a big rock on the finger, if the shoes go with the outfit. People notice who has a big gut, who needs a haircut, has crappy nails, shirt and tie combos, eyeglasses, wedding ring, posture.

We subconsciously take in and process many bits of information on most people we encounter, but hardly ever think to comment.

To suggest that most people do not notice your watch is presumptuous.

And by the way, I too love my Explorer!

I think that because we spend so much time on the forums, post photos and comments, and admire all sorts of watches, we sort of expect the same in the "real world". Not many in this day and age take much notice of watches, mostly attending to cell phone activities and using same to tell the time.

Over the past decade or so, I can remember only a couple of times anyone commented on the watch I was wearing. Actually, the one that most comes to mind was when I wore my 36mm Explorer I while visiting a very high end mens' clothing store. The clerk commented that he really liked my watch, and did ask me what brand it was. The other time was on the patio at a local brew pub, and a couple sitting across from me asked me about my Omega Speedy.

Since I got my last Rolex, an OP34 with Olive Green dial, I have noticed a few people glancing at my wrist. But that's about it.

I personally love the Explorer IIs, I just think that they're overshadowed by the Submariner and GMTs. We win because they're slightly cheaper than the other two. Enjoy it, like the other members said, we buy them for our enjoyment NOT to be noticed.

This is pretty much the norm...we are accustomed to the obsession with watches here and that doesn't really exist in the real world. They do get noticed from time to time but you don't realize they get noticed. The best place to get your watch noticed is in an upper end watch store brand doesn't matter...because they know if you have bought one you might buy another.

I'd rather have them not noticing my watch or commenting on it.

My 114270 is my favorite Rolex and it was my first.

I related just the other day on another Rolex thread about the Explorer that a group of pilots and other aircraft types who belong to the same club I belong to called me out for wearing a "fake" Rolex--the Explorer.

And I have been told before by a single individual that my Explorer is not a Rolex because it doesn't have diamonds.

A lot of people, even those with tons of money, don't have any idea what a Rolex looks like, beyond some cultural stereotypes.

Some of the naysayers I feel sorry for and some I just laugh at.

It hardly matters. The 114270 is still my favorite Rolex.

Only lifetime subscribers of 30 years plus to National Geographic would know what an Explorer looked like.

Any Sub without a cyclops is likely to be questioned by some of the uninitiated.

No big deal. My 14060M is still one of my favorite watches.
