Incoming - only took 3+ years!

After lurking on this great community for 3+ years reading/learning and ogling at all the beautiful watches, I finally managed to snag my first Patek - a mint 5164 from a fellow TRF member (thanks Bailey!). It took me another week, however, to work up my courage while waiting for the spring bar tool to be delivered so I can cut the strap down to size.

The watch WAY exceeds my expectations - I had never seen one in the metal before FedEx delivered it. The pictures do not do it justice, but I did try with my camera today:

I only realized after I took the pics that I should've wiped the dial a bit to get rid of the smudges and lint - rookie mistake! Anyways, I never expected to own an Aquanaut because when I first came across Patek while surfing the internet, it was the 5970G that just made my jaw drop and got me hooked. I think someone used "cyberpunk" to describe the 5970 and that just really resonated with me. Alas, a 5970 might never be in reach for me but it's good to have goals in life lol.

I don't have a long history with fine timepieces, but like good music, they seem to mark some of life's milestones. When I finished school and was about to start my career, I saw my uncle wearing a Gucci watch and loved it. So I went and bought it for $300-$400 and proceeded to wear it for 10 years.

After that, I bought a Rolex Explorer II after marking a career transition. At the time, it seemed like the most expensive thing I had ever bought! Like this was an 80 lb HDTV (this is before flat screen TV's lol) I'm wearing on my wrist because that's how much HDTV's cost back then! I wore the Rolex constantly and babied it like a newborn. I would walk with my left arm behind me when I was going through doors or in a crowded space. Come to think of it....I still do that now! One thing for sure though is that there were many times at work or in other settings where having that watch on my wrist gave me the quiet confidence to be...me.

So now....I'm about to embark on another career transition and I have the 5164 to accompany me along the way. I haven't decided what to do with the Rolex. I might keep it for sentimental reasons and wear it once in a while. Unlike many or most of you, I'm typically a one watch guy!

Sorry for the wordy post, but here are two last pics:

Congratulates! A fine entry into the Patek club, wear it in good health!

PS. I would recommend keeping the Rolex. Not just for sentimental value, there will also still be occasions where you would rather wear a slightly less delicate "tough watch" (I speak from experience).

Finally haha! Congrats, it looks great on your wrist.

Keep the Explorer as your "beater" watch.

Congrats! And I agree with the above, hang on to that Rolex. I bought mine new and sold it like a big dummy. To this day, it’s one of my watch regrets.

Huge congrats!

I know mine got away from your grasp, but the window opened shortly thereafter and it was truly meant to be.
