5164 vs Daytona on Oysterflex

Hi again folks,

Once again I'd appreciate your opinions on which watch you personally would go for. Assuming you keep one of these two for life and use on a regular basis, which one do you think would age well?

IMHO while the Daytona will probably look the same 30 years down the road with minimal care, the Patek will age quite more with scratches on the steel bezel, and perhaps develop a patina on the dial and will require more care and servicing.

This topic seems borderline philosophical as well..lol Do you prefer something that seems to last forever, or do you prefer to accept and appreciate the impermanence of things?

tough call, but 5164. I would want both though.

I think they are both going to age similarly except the bezel and the clasp. Advantage Rolex ceramic on the bezel. The rolex clasp will get way, way more beat up than the aquanaut though. Its big and chunky and white gold.

5164 vs Daytona on Oysterflex

How come I never thought of this comparison before .

Two of my favorite watches. I own the 5164 and love it. It is very comfortable and under the radar. The travel time complication is easy to use and very useful. Very versatile and to watch geeks it is instantly recognizable. As a steel patek it retains good value and pateks in general give very high satisfaction and prestige. Service cost of patek is much higher than the Daytona so is the MSRP.

The Daytona on the other hand is very gorgeous and being white gold it is arguably better value at lower price. The oysterflex IMHO is better bracelet Than the patek rubber strap. But it will lose some value down the road as any pm rolex. Also it is very flashy and eye catchy due to its beautiful design and shiny materials. Needless to say the iconic status of any Daytona and again very high satisfaction and prestige (being Daytona for me offsets the difference in brand image between patek and rolex)

Very hard to decide, I can't tell you what to do because I myself hoping to add the Daytona so I can't choose one obviously

May be if you put a knife on my throat to pick one it would be the Daytona simply because I am a very big fan of Daytonas over any other watch ( a part from the nautilus 5712 and fp journe chronometre bleu)

I was looking at both but went for the better and more intricately crafted and finished Patek. As for permanence I think there is a high chance these Daytonas will come out on a WG bracelet, so too high a risk for me now after recent Rolex PM undercutting decisions on BLRO and SkyD.

I struggled with this decision. I would still go with a 5164. For some reason I have a mental block with buying a Rolex missing the bracelet. The Patek is more intricately finished, has a more useful complication and better legibility. I find it hard to justify paying a huge upcharge just for some white gold when intrinsically, the same watch is available at less than half the price (i.e. the SS), though if you compare grey SS prices vs the MSRP of the WG, then the upcharge is much more justified.

What I ended up doing - selling the 5164 to upgrade to a 5990 to maintain the travel time function, I now have a 5712, and I've put my 116500 on an Oysterflex. Best of all possible worlds!

For me it’s very simple. The 5164A is the best aquanaut imho, atleast until I can even get my hands on a 5168 or 5968 to compare. Side note Pateks willingness to keep 5168 production to a minimum has me surprised.

The 116519 is second fiddle to the 116500s in either dial for me. If they put it on a bracelet I would seriously entertain one. Although to be honest I’m not fond of the dial as much as I am the YG Black dial model.

Ironically if the 5164 only came in bracelet I would have never entertained it.

Very few watches look great on either bracelet or strap the way say a basic sub does.

This. To me, the SS Daytona looks better. The WG Daytona is really nice but I can’t get pass the Oysterflex; just doesn’t look as good as the Oyster bracelet. The 5164 looks right on the tropical strap.

IMO Daytona needs to be on bracelet. Aquanaut fits perfectly on rubber so 64 for me. Get the 64 and add a steel daytona. That is the exact thing I am doing once I get the call for the 64!

I am not convinced that in 30 years a rubber strap on a $30k - $40k watch (in 2018 dollars) will have aged that well, looks-wise. So if you are thinking "keep it forever" I would look for a watch that you can swap a bracelet on, which you cannot do with the Daytona. Not sure about the 5164A.

And as always, if you want the consensus to be Rolex, ask on the Rolex sub-forum. If you want it to be Patek, ask here.

I may be the only one with this issue, but when I owned a black dial Daytona it was frequently hard to read because of the glare from the crystal and reflective dial. Someone else on this forum called the Daytona a "signaling mirror." I just don't understand why Rolex doesn't use a robust anti-reflective coating. I've never had this complaint with PP or AP.

Rolex core demographic likes bling is the best guess. Breitling has had a nice double AR for years.

Yes, I've seen the 64 on a bracelet and it just doesn't work at all for me, same with the 67. I also much prefer the ROOs on straps so some sports watches really do lend themselves to straps. ROs and Nautiluses on bracelets.

The Daytona is timeless, but this not the most "timeless" of all the Daytonas right? You'd probably want a bracelet and possibly steel, if you want the most classic version possible. It's unlikely, but I feel this one could age a little, in a way that the Daytona-C or Zenith ones won't.

Anyway, I'd go with the Aquanaut if you want rubber. I love how the strap and dial are quite complementary, whereas the Daytona one just doesn't have the same execution. Either one are good choices. Enjoy!

5164 without a doubt. Though I really love the look of the Daytona. Gorgeous watch, but the SS is the iconic one to get. You will rarely see a 5164 in any AD now whereas you will find this Daytona occasionally.

I have a 5164 and it's my favorite watch! Great daily wearer and below the radar.

Part of a few, 5164.

I have this Daytona. It’s for sure a keeper. I’d pick this Daytona over the 5164.

I would choose WG Daytona, between these two. It's cooler than 5164; it kinda looks like "6263 Big Red".
But it would've been different, if it were against a Nautilus.

Both is an option I’d definitely explore, but gun to my head the patek without hesitation.

I would go for the PP because of the higher finish and the more useful complication
