Panerai steel alloy

Hey guys,

I was wondering about the steel alloy that Panerai uses for their cases.
I found that it is easier to scratch and different to polish than 316l from brands like Omega and Breitling, I have to adjust the polishing machine RPM in order to get the right finish.

904l (Rolex) gives me the best results though.

Yet it's different than steel from Omega and Breitling, who also use 316l

Could there be different versions of 316l or is it all exactly the same? I swear it feels different when refinishing a Panerai.

316L is 316L. If it were different, it wouldn't be 316L.

Steels usually have ranges for the non iron elements in it. For 316L the chromium, nickel and molybdenum content may vary a bit. A quick googling will show you this: 16-18% Cr, 10-14% Ni, 2-3% Mo.

My guess is that they simply use a different supplier and/or asked for specific properties.
