PAM Questions

Bear with me guys. I know very little about these watches.

I had a brief love affair once, but it was short lived. I’m recently loving these watches again, and debating picking something up.

I was just killing time and saw a 1940 657 and I really liked it. At 45mm that’s typically very big for me. But because of the slim profile, it fit super.

Curious what the consensus is on the 1940 line.

Also Chadri prefers the 1950 Luminor. So I started looking at those. I like them too. And at 44mm options I’m getting just a tiny bit smaller. But are they as slim as the 1940?

I tend to like a second hand and a date. Don’t care about a GMT, but I won’t kick it out of the watch box for having that complication.

Lume and the ability to change out straps is super important to me.

There appears to be so many to choose from, I’d appreciate any thoughts from you PAM experts.

Thanks,

Hey Seth, great to see you looking into Panerai (again)

I’m by no means an expert, hopefully some of the other guys will come along shortly to give their opinions. I do kind of know what I like so on my short list with this brand it would be:

Sandwich dial (just says a Panerai to me)
3,6 (open), 9 (open) and 12
I also like a clean simple dial
I prefer 1940 Rad cases to Luminor cases (I know I’m weird)
I also love sunburst dials.

Size wise, I had no idea I could pull off a 47, but it wears surprisingly well on my 7” wrist and it’s the classic Panerai size so it also appeals to me on that basis.

Happy hunting

Yep...had a PAM 510 before to be “safe” as I felt it was already pushing the boundaries on size. But when I saw the 422 (after selling off the 510), I just loved the dial as it oooozed panerai. Never thought it would sit well in my wrist and it is definitely on the large side. But once I had it on the wrist, had to bring it home.

Thanks! Yeah, I don’t see a lot of love for the 422 on here but it ticks so many boxes for me - , sandwich dial, open 6 (gave up the open 9 for the small seconds ), 47 size, gold hands...quintessential panerai qualities in my book!

you guys are killing me. ha.

do we know of any PAM 1940 that has a flat dial, 45mm has a second hand and a date?

Besides the GMT, simply because I am looking for flat dial with no texture.

Cant find anything like this.

There aren't any 1940 Rad cases with the combo you're looking for. What about some of the laminar due models, like the 904 or 906 at 42mm or the 943 at 45mm? The 904 and 943 have the sunburst dial and the 906 is the ivory color.

Hey Seth, exciting times! Enjoy the hunt.

Are you set on the 1940 case and no others?

If so, and you want 45mm and not GMT, check out the 572 (SS, black dial) or 619 (Ti, chocolate dial). 572 will probably give you more strap combos. 619 is a stunner on the Asso strap. Neither have the date though. But they have a very nice micro-rotor and are thinner than 1950 Luminors or 47mm 1940 Rads. Plus, both give you the classic 3/6/9/12 numerals while also giving you the small seconds, which is the best of both worlds on a Panerai dial, IMO.

If you really want the date and the 1940 case, you'll have to stretch to 47mm and look at the 514 (SS, black dial) or 736 (if any are left and if you want a green dial PAM).

If what you really want is the date, small seconds and enjoy having ridiculously easy strap changes (thanks to the quick strap change buttons), look at the 233. GMT and the fang PR indicator (love it or hate it... I love it), but, being a manual wind, it's a thinner 1950 Luminor, it has a gorgeous dome crystal and is an absolute modern classic Panerai.

Anyway, most importantly, take your time. There are several core models that often get recommended, but nothing beats finding the one you love.

Cru, thanks for the info brother. That is gold, and exactly what I was looking for.

Weird that, with all the stuff they have, they don't have a watch with a date and the seconds hand.

I do think I am pushing towards the 1940 case. I really like how it looked and even felt at that size, felt that it was super smooth on the wrist. I also liked how incredibly legible it was.

I am thinking I will possible pull the trigger on this one. I might even buy that exact one. The AD is losing PAM and they offered me 20% off right off the bat. If they will go to 30%, I will go today and pick it up.

I know you suggested taking my time, but that is just not my style. lmao. For better or worse. And while I have been thinking about PAMs again for about a month or so, this is the one that really piqued my interest due to how it felt on the wrist.

I don't hate having the GMT, just not needed.

Most certainly can't pull of the 47mm. Even mentally, that is just too big for me.

I will let you know how it goes. Hard to pass up the potential for 30% off from an AD.

Super sexy with the ceramic + ecru lume + blue hand!

It will wear a bit chunky, though, in case you haven't tried it on.

Good luck, my man! If you love it, go for it.

For this model you're looking at, I do prefer the tuxedo dial you picked to the waffle (see the 627), as I think the waffle looks better on a cleaner PAM (see the 634). I don't know what you think of PR indicators, but the 658 could be worth considering.

I will say that even at 30% off MSRP, you'll probably take more of a hit if (when?) you flip it, in case that matters much.
