Then you should have known better than to browse the ads on Craigslist?
CL is a marketplace, yes there is junk but I also sold watches and other items on there legitimately and without incident in the past.

"In January of this year, I saw an ad on Craigslist for a Rolex Submariner 116610LN. The ad stated that it was a 2015 watch with no box & papers."

...Then why did you buy it? A newer watch should have everything with it. Including box, papers and an original receipt. Not everyone keeps these items, I did when I bought mine new.

"After making contact with the seller I agreed on a price of $5,000..." It its too good to be true....[COLOR="red"There is truth in this. The asking price was higher, but since the box and papers were missing I adjusted the offer price to offset the missing items. Still, it was a flag nonetheless [/COLOR]

"The kid showed up with the watch "on belay of his dad". ...and you gave a kid your money? Seriously? The recipient of the funds is not the issue, it could have been a dog in a clown suit, why would that matter? I only cared about the watch, if it was a 50 year old in a suit would that have made a difference? I don't think so

The whole transaction from beginning to end was a recipe for disaster. Buy new from an AD is my advice.
hindsight is 20/20 I did take every precaution buying a second hand watch and got screwed in the process.

I can appreciate the points being made here, unfortunately I can't go back in time to punch the kid (mid 20's) in the face and get my money back. All I can do is hope for my day in court to watch them go to jail for screwing people over.

Absolutely -- would not consent to purchase if the seller took the watch out of sight after the authentication...

Sorry to hear about this--lot of scum out there.

You say he's in his mid 20's and you're in SoCal... wouldn't happen to be the same group as the one described in this thread would it - https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=555646

The seller also posted up a reward offered ad on CL with the supposed thief's photo - https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...264635254.html

There is also a Facebook link to the thief/thief's friend somewhere in that ad.

I would not be surprised if they are all connected. But a different guy. He was a white kid, then built and a little taller than the rst pictured in the CL post.

Terrible situation. I'm very very sorry this happened to you. And of course hindsight is 20/20 but there were many red flags from the beginning. Unfortunately I think you were zoned in on snagging a sub for a too good to be true price and missed them. And it ended up being too good to be true. An expensive lesson. Thanks for sharing your experience. If anyone learns anything from this at least it will bring some value to a crummy situation.

A tell tale sign on these fake movements is the red gear wheels. The teeth never hold the red on the fakes since the gears are just painted and not Teflon coated like the real ones.

Can't believe you wore that thing for 9 months.

Too good to be true.

What if it was just an aftermarket gear placed into a genuine movement?

I'm not aware of any true aftermarket Teflon coated gears. As far as I know, it is a proprietary, factory only part. Why would anyone skimp on that part? That would be like buying parts for your Ferrari at AutoZone.

The "red" gears have NOTHING to do with it being guaranteed fake movement!

Agreed; my response was a weak attempt to point out that one must be able to use many points of reference when determining authenticity.

Honestly, looking back at this. I would have changed one only one thing. No one touches the watch after authentication is complete. It is very depressing. I am still having nightmares about this.

Sorry to hear. There's a handful of tells just from looking at the dial and case but it's not worth discussing here.

Hopefully you still get your PP.

Thank you everyone for the kind remarks.

I do have an update. I was notified today that they found the suspect. Thsts all the information they provided since it's an ongoing investigation. I am anxiously waiting to see these scumbags go to jail.

I will update as I get more information.

Woot! Great to hear.

Y'know, your boys in blue sound a lot more effective than the ones downunder... here they seem to just protect the crims

@South Texas- I am pretty sure Adam is stating it is a fake for far more obvious reasons than the red gears. Which I have to agree that there are many things off with this piece.

@ OP- Buy on here from a trusted seller or buy from an AD but never trust craigslist or the sewer rats that inhabit it..

i mean, the fake watch looks fake..Just look at the writing on the dial, it looks like a child wrote it. Font is wacky and not neat.

def not a 1250 fake.. the LEC is bad also..If you simply would've read the writing on the dial.. real rolex writing is perfect. If you see any imperfections its fake. This one is clearly a fake.

where are you located op? I'm in so cal.. I might be interested in selling or trading my 1 month old sub c date for a blnr.

It’s easy to see now since the pictures are close up. Looking at it from wrist distance it’s not as easy to spot. The $$ value of the fake was quoted by a watchmaker. In the grand scheme of things none of that matters. It’s not worth it’s weight in scrap metal. PM me on your Submariner.

Thanks for sharing and sorry to hear about the scam. You just don't know these days who
's really out to scam you, do you? We generally believe that 99.9% of all people we meet are good people. It's a lesson for us all.
