If it was "faded" the backside would still be green. It looks like an attempt to "force" patina/fade it (via chemical and/or mechanical means) that went horribly wrong, lol.
I am guessing it was already beat up/scratched so it was less of a risk to experiment on. Still, it would have been worth a lot more by just leaving it alone. SMH...
