Rolex that keeps its value
A colleague asked me this last week and I confess not to know anything about non sports watches. He is looking to buy his first Rolex and wants to narrow down the choice to popular watches - in case he ever needs to sell as this is a big purchase for him
No point looking at sports models as they are at the top of his budget and here in UK you can't find most of them anyhow So something classic looking like a datejust 41mm? They look nice to me especially the blue face model but I only ever look at the sports and pm daytonas whenever I am in an AD |

no way around it you can buy something popular or unpopular that you imagine is rare and undervalued (16518/16622). I would either buy a ss GMT, SeaD or Sub, whether new or 4 or 5 digit, or almost any 4 or 5 digit daytona or any ss daytona. SS SkyD may hold well but it's too early to tell.

A DJ is not going to hold value as well as a sub or a Daytona. You can tell your "friend" that you're going to have to pay to play.

I can tell you I bought my first Sea Dweller back in 1998 used for $2.4k (new they were around $3.6k) and was offered $6500 for it just last week. I was pondering selling since i just picked up a new SD43. Not too bad.

Check out Watchfinder's prices and then estimate what they must have paid for them.

I'm happy with a Rolex that keeps its time.
As far as value goes, steel sports model. Can't go wrong with a sub, gmt, or Daytona but he's not going to get a Daytona for retail.

Buying a watch in the hope it keeps its value is a bad strategy. Buy something you like and would want to wear for a long time.

SS Daytona is likely the best bet for retaining value. Hard to find a good deal however.

He's in good shape just buying an SS Rolex. If he doesn't like sports models he is handicapping resale.

Buy lightly used, keep for 10 years, you get your money back. Buy lightly used sports model, keep for 10 years you'll do a bit better. Nowadays these watches are made in the millions. Apart from the odd anomaly; 16610lv for example there will be no pn Daytona's.

All rolex's will appreciate over time.
The sports models such as subs, GMTs and Daytonas are more sure investments and will most likely appreciate more than the dressier DJ models which are available in bucket loads at the moment. Not so popular at the moment but I have this weird inkling that the milgaus Z Blue Dial is going to be one of those time pieces that is going to turn into one of those sought after rare vintage pieces a decade on from now, and will fetch a hell of a lot of money. (Just my feeling but I could be wrong and it could end up being a dud investment). |

Agree with all previous posts .And personally think the 16610LV will be the one to have , but the prices for these are already at silly money.

Buy it at right price and it will always hold value.
I don’t remember how much I paid for mine but it holds very sentimental value for me. |

For him, I would choose a Submariner which in the end will hold more value than a DJ.

Thanks all. Have advised to go SS sports, used. It's what I said originally to him so it's good to have that validated by yourselves
Actually saw a blue dj41 in london ad window today and quite like it myself for a "cheaper" model. Like the blue face a lot |

Irrelevant what model it is, it's all about what you pay vs fair market value. The lower spread you pay the dealer over the trade in a different dealer would pay you, the better it will hold it's value. Any estimation as to future value is simply speculation and not really relevant for the purpose of buying well, as it could go either way.

If it were me on a budget and want to play it safe I'd go for a slightly used (2015) OP39 I see them in terms low 4k range. Just my.02

Well, that depends on how much you pay for it. If you get a 15% discount it will hold its value much better than if you get a 0% discount.

Rolex that keeps its value
If your friend had to sell it later to cover a cash shortage he will lose more value than the average collector fetches when they sell at leisure. So even a good deal today on a model that retains long-term popularity/demand will lose half its original value when sold in a hurry later.
Now if he can save enough in next 12 months to replace the funds he’ll spend on the watch then he may never need to sell it. That’s the better approach methinks. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

while buying with investment criteria in mind is wise...you need to be careful not to spend a bunch of money on a watch...only to find that you don't love it as much the "other one" that supposedly isn't as good of an investment. There is a lot to be said for buying what you REALLY want...because you know you will love it...and that's pretty important criteria as well.
