extension which he said he could modify to fit between lugs. I bought the bracelet which you see in my avatar. Note the lugs were not cut or modified.

I can't help you on price difference between leather strap and bracelet.

Thanks for your reply. So your 6239 had been supplied to your AD by Rolex with a leather strap, not with a bracelet, and they had it on display before you bought it with the leather strap?

See the BBC have picked up on it. Suspect they'll be a few articles on this in the Sunday papers tomorrow

Paul Newman's watch sells for record $18m at auction http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-41787046

Thanks. So, like you, Joanne may well have bought the watch without a bracelet and with a leather strap.

Good video with interviews with Nell Newman, the seller James Cox and Aurel Bacs the Phillips auctioneer where they talk about the watch.

Here's the video with the accompanying Hodinkee article about the background and sale of PN's PN Daytona:

To answer the question about cost, the scan in this post if from a 1970 C.D. Peacock of Chicago catalog. Item F is a stainless steel Daytona on leather strap with a price listed of $235.

That's a good vid, thanks.

What I don't agree with, though, is the repeated statement I keep hearing that this particular watch is what 'started it all', as if there were no collectors of vintage watches before JW gave PN this Daytona, and that everyone since, is only into vintage watches/Rolex because of it. Of course, it's been very influential and hugely significant, but I can't accept that without it, there would be no VR collectors.

Well said. That annoyed me too. I got into acryclic Subs in the mid-'90s, long before I knew anything about Paul Newman and his Daytona. Sure, the fervor in the vintage market wasn't the same back then (nor the prices), but there were plenty of collectors already out there.

You know. I don't care. It just hypes sales of currant production numbers higher, and allows Rolex to justify ridiculous retail prices.
