Yesterday I visited an AD in New Bond Street, London and enquired about the BLNR. The assistant smiled and said 'Ah yes, the 116710 also known as Batman'

The nicknames for watches are great for me to know the watches people are referring to. You will pick up the reference model numbers quickly after spending time on 'forums' frequented by watch enthusiasts. Nicknames are still easier to remember.

Doesn't bother me one bit and certainly won't put me off in buying any watches that have been assigned a nickname.

Ha - I won't let it do really! (My post was slightly 'tongue in cheek')

As much as I really don't like them, I will just not use them and try not to think of them. Or as someone suggested - think of my own nicknames

For no valid reason I'm more accepting of the nicknames that were here before me. The ones trumped up in the "Nickname the New Watch" threads not so much.

It is what it is. I call 'em what I want and give others the right to do the same. Life's too short.
which are the "Root Beer", "Fat lady" and "Pussy Galore"?

I don't pay much attention to the nicknames being used, however my skin gets to crawling when people start referring to their Rolex, car, boat, etc. as their "baby."

Example: "I just brought my baby home (followed by a pic of whatever Rolex they just bought)! I waited for a nice sunny day to get it, because I just couldn't stand rain drops or mist landing on my new baby..."

Nicknames don't bother me too much, makes the pieces easier to refer to for people who may not be clued up on all the ref numbers.

The Pussy Galore is the original 6542 GMT, so named because Honor Blackman's character wore this watch in Goldfinger. The Fat Lady (aka Sophia Loren) is the reference 16760. The nickname is in reference to the thicker case. The Root Beer is the two tone that came with a gold/brown two tone bezel and was available in certain versions in a bronze sunburst dial. Particularly cool imho were the ones with the nipple dials, these were 16753's I believe.

I agree. Call it what you want it to be called. Or, just call a gorgeous Rolex!

The names are a little silly. But it makes it a lot easier when discussing the different models in a forum setting. I'm still surprised that the "Daytona 500" didn't stick. When Rolex assigned the 116500 model number they must have known the connection.
