My jump into vintage

Here’s my newest acquisition and it’s a Submariner ref: 5513 Serif dial! My first real vintage pickup. Everything looks to be original and I’m loving it. I traded my SD43 and some coin for this. It’s from my birth year and it looked to be I’m great shape. What do you folks think?

That looks amazing. I recently got into vintage and I got to say, it’s a total different experience than modern.

Looks good!

I think the insert/pip may not be original though due to lack of patina compared to the dial/hands?

I love how simple and uncluttered the dials were back then....so much cleaner than the paragraph they write on a 6 digit Sub these days.

Congrats on the pickup!

Wonderful patina. Case looks fat. Crown guards have a hard shelf.
Insert isn’t correct.

It should be between 2.5 and 4 million serial, this prob closer to 3.

Beautiful watch! I also have a 5513 birth year. Only thing that looks questionable is the lume on the second hand.

My jump into vintage

Thanks everyone for the compliments! Before, I figured mostly everything on the watch seemed original except for the bezel and pip. Now that someone’s mentioned the seconds hand it seems a bit suspect it could have been swapped at some point along with the dial as it matches the dial plots. Watch is running fine using Toolwatch, but should I take it in to have the watch mechanics looked at? The dealer i got the watch from (HQ Milton) is highly recognized around my area. It is a bit worrisome the more I realize that this could be a bit of a Frankenwatch prompting me to return the watch. The watch is a 5.6 serial and the bracelet is within the timeline (late 70s).

Is this normal for a watch this age? And also rare to have all parts original? Any other thoughts would be great and here’s a few more pics.

Parts changed

One thing to think about when buying vintage Rolex tool watches is exactly that. They are meant to be used. As such those that looked after their watches via Rolex etc may have had parts swapped out over their lifetime to keep on top of the watches reliability and looks etc. As such others that simply used them and abused them everyday maintained their originality. We are in a place where if you desire originality then rougher watches may be easier to obtain whereas nicer looking (opinions vary) watches will have had parts swapped out due to time/maintenance. Its really a personal choice. If you are lucky you can find a nice original & not rough watch but you will pay a premium.

I wouldn't worry. the color is different on each of the hands. Colors fade differently and less grime accumulates on a round surface, maybe.

Pardon my observation as I am also in the learning stage of vintage Rolex.

http://www.5513mattedial.com/MaxiDials.html

From I read from this site, it seems like yours is a Serif Dial which has the serial numbers ranging from 2.3 to 4.0 mil.

However, your serial number is 5.6 mil, which should be in the Maxi 1 range?

I notice that too. I used these as reference to date the watch and they matched what the seller listed. Then I thought I had non-serif but my watch has all the characteristics of serif. Somethings not accurate.

If you look at sold watches at HQ Milton, there are quite a few serif dials in the mid to high 5 million serial range. Keep in mind that lists are always approximate, anyway (and sometimes inaccurate).

Not saying one way or another with this Sub, but I'd do additional research, and speak to Jacek, before reaching any conclusions. Even Beaumont's great site says to use the serial-number range for different dials as a guide, not an absolute.

Insert definitely looks later, but I assume that was disclosed at the time of sale, yes? Do you have a link to the original listing on the HQ Milton site?

Congrats and welcome to vintage! Now that everyone has seemed to have weighed in on what’s original and what’a not - at worst Frankens(!), serial numbers etc, not to mention the prices - and you start to see what a minefield vintage Rolex really is. Enjoy the ride!

Just mention of a fat font bezel from the listing, though the sales rep did point out the pip looked to be swapped out at one point.

The seconds hand fully appears, based on the color, to have been changed. The 5.6 serial number is late for a seriff dial.
