Superlative Sixties Seiko
I've had this one for a while now but forgot if I ever timed it, so three or four days ago I wound it and made a note of the time. After a few daily winds, I checked it today and it was still running dead on. Not bad for a 57 year old watch. The timegrapher confirms my findings, with a decent amplitude, though the beat error is a little off. I think this one deserves a new strap and some regular wear.
Incidentally these were the first Seikos to show a depth rating on the dial, and were marketed as dive watches.

Thanks guys. It looks like these originally came on an oyster-type band (if this book cover is showing an original) but I think I might let it spend its retirement on vintage brown leather. Stay tuned!

Thanks...yes it's 36mm across, and 45mm lug to lug. Quite large for the early 60s.

Depends on what city you visit and what you're looking for to an extent, but most cities seem to have a few good places.

Great looking watch. What's the lug width on it; 18, 19 or 20mm?

Thanks. Might have to look for one of these. I have a spare dive strap but it's 20mm... although nothing a sharp knife won't rectify.
How difficult is it to find spare movement parts? The gear train looks similar to an ETA. The full bridge is a welcome sight on a watch that old. |

This just goes to show how well made Seikos are. I found the first automatic watch my dad gave me from almost 40 years ago rummaging through drawers at parent’s house. Mom still had it. Its a Seiko 5 and was never opened. Scratched to bits and runs still!

I've noticed that vintage Seiko seem to be much more likely than other brands (even vintage Rolex) to run well "straight out of the drawer" as it were. Here's a 1964 Seiko Champion for example, which I got last year and threw on the machine.

Perfect, thanks. I'll bookmark that one and do some research. I've seen many vintage Seiko but this one caught my attention.

They were really popular in Japan at the time, and there was some movie product placement when it came out. The same (or very similar) watch was prominently worn by Eiji Okda in the Oscar-nominated Woman in the Dunes (1964).

That's so cool and to think it was marketed as a dive watch
