It gets banded around that every Rolex collection 'must have' a Submariner. Personally, I find that difficult to disagree with; it's an iconic watch and a pretty awesome piece.

Now, in your opinion, which reference should no Panerai enthusiast be without? If need be, break it down to one each from the Luminors and Radiomirs

372 if have the wrist for it. I think 312 / 1312 is kinda a Pam staple too. Then there's the zeros. See hard to pick just one.

None I fear. Almost every other brand has one "must have" (Rolex, at least, have several) that could be owned by anyone, but I feel Panerai has boxed itself in by the recreation of its past. While the 372 is the model that embodies the brand's history the most, it (along with many of their other references) is of a size that almost guarantees that it will never suit most watch lovers. Further, since its introduction, almost every other Panerai seems now to be just a casual nod to, or worse still, an exploitation of that history, that the shine has been taken off many other models that were considered worthy beforehand. I guess the trouble is that the brand is now so associated with its origins that watches that look different (like the beautiful 655) will find it hard to get a toe hold in the "must have" stakes. I'm sorry that is the case, because I love the iconic look, but that is my take on the topic.

What's great about Panerai is that there's such a wealth of choice, anyone can find their own "must have" in the catalogue.

So, I suppose I would ask, what is the "quintessential" Luminor and Radiomir?

Not an easy question to answer, but I'd say 000 or 372 for Luminor and 232 for Radiomir.

231 for a Radiomir was my choice.

I am not a fan of the Luminor.

233 always. Preferably the "dot"

It is the first maunfacture, it has the same profile as the new 1950 case all the way back then, but with the domed crystal, and it is "8 days" (actually 10), fang, crown lock...

+1 for 372 dan 232. I have both, if I have to choose one, it would be the 372. Sometimes when I crave for Rolex, I'll have this debate in my mind to trade the 232 for a sub. But everytime trying the sub next to the 232, I'll end up keeping the 232. Something about the dial that "turns me on"

Pam 359 "Dirty Dial"
Pam 382 "Bronzo"
Pam 233

These are the popular ones I've seen many people get. Except the "Bronzo" which is pretty expensive and rare. Personally its my favorite Pam and pretty iconic piece.
