Well I hope this year is better

2018 sucked. My 85 year old mother was hospitalized with arrhythmia. She recovered, but they found things during the treatment and she ended up having to have triple bypass. There were many complications but she eventually recovered and is looking and acting 10 years younger then before the surgery, (ONE good thing about the year). Then, she fell and broke her hip. While she was recovering from surgery in the hospital her 15 year old beloved dog died in my arms in their living room, the next morning I had to break the news to her. About a month later, on Thanksgiving, her (very close) sister, my aunt, passed away. That would be enough for one family don't you think? On Christmas night, my mother, father and I were in their living room, joking about the bad year, laughing, my father rocking in his favorite chair. Then, he said he was getting more eggnog and stood up, then immediately dropped. My mother, a retired nurse found no pulse or breathing, she started CPR, but at 85 years old and about 85 pounds couldn't put much force so I took over. Less then five minutes later the fire department arrived, hit him with the paddles as a neighbor dragged my mother to another room and I watched them try and bring my father back. He was pronounced DOA at the hospital. His funeral was last Saturday.

Being an only child this all falls on me to support my mother. She is doing about as well as could be expected, but it will take time to adjust.

Am I wrong to be angry at the world? Thinking we got more then our share of pain in 2018?

Sorry to read all this. Seems unfair to happen to one family like this. I wish you all the best and the courage to stay strong in 2019.

Paul, that's gut wrenching, and I know how you feel. I sincerely hope 2019 is a better year for you.

Today marks exactly 2 years since I lost my dad (he was 3 weeks shy of his 68th birthday). My birthday is next week, I'll be 35 (was 32 when I lost him). He had been sick off-and-on from cancers attributed to Agent Orange, but was doing well. He felt a little sick and so didn't come up to Reno for New Year 2017 with my mom, but stayed home so he wouldn't get us all sick. I had just found out my wife was pregnant with our first child (a boy). He checked himself into the hospital on the 6th, my mom rushed home; on the 10th, she asked my sister and I to come down because it didn't look good. He'd had some internal bleeding... they took him down for another cauterization the next day, after we'd made it to the hospital, where he coded in the elevator. My mom, sister and I, in shock, watched the ICU staff doing chest compressions on him for 15 minutes before I told them to stop... Hardest thing I've ever done.

I don't know you, Paul, and I don't think we've ever directly communicated on TRF before now, but I'll be sure to pour one out for you and your dad tonight as I sit on the back porch with a cigar and scotch, talking to my dad. I wish you all the best in 2019.

You definitely got more than your share and. It’s definitely the worlds fault! Somehow or another the wheels of time have been speeding faster than humanly possible. Time is too short and I am sorry to hear you got robbed of more of it with your dad! That’s terrible and you are in my thoughts and prayers! My dad passed two years ago and my father in law (who I was super close to) passed last year. God bless xo

Being angry isn't going to help. About all you can do is try to look past the sadness and difficulties and remember the good and the love. As the saying goes, 'As bad as you have it, there's plenty of folks who have it worse.'

Keep the head up.

Stay strong Paul.

My parents are 89 and 87. He has little quality of life, and she is (basically) his carer (arguably the reason why he has little quality of life....wonderfully admirable cantankerous old cow that she is!).

Basically...unless one is extremely lucky then everything is shit at that sort of age.

I know this is easy to say at the grand old age of 52, but unless you are one of the lucky ones.....beyond 80 is pretty questionable.

Enjoy it now my friends.

Wishing you a better 2019 Paul. I am also a only child and am a ways down the road from you with regards to your Dad. My Mom is still here at 85 although is very fragile and in a home. Dad passed on 12-25-99. I can tell you it sounds like your Dad had a good life with your mom and he didnt suffer at all. Be happy for that because watching a loved one in pain deteriorating for a long time in the hospital isnt any fun either. You will never forget but time heals all wounds. Took me a few months to come back around.

Paul, I am not sure if you are a man of faith but all I can say is that the Lord will never give anyone more than they can handle.

You have had to be tremendously strong to keep it all together in the past year and 2019 has to be better. Because 2018 was really bad. You are due for some good luck and a good year.

My mother died on Christmas morning in 2000. She was very young and it was extremely difficult on all of us. It gets better every year. We use that day to celebrate all of the good memories of mom. But it still sucks.

Never met or talked to you but thinking about you and praying for good things to come your way.

Hey Paul,
When you're down you have nowhere to go but up.

My Dad is in his dead throes in the hospital and I am flying today to snuck in a bottle of wine, salmon and steak before he passes on.

Things have a way of sorting themselves out for the better.
Says the optimist in me.

Cheers to a beautiful 2019!

Sorry to hear that Paul and I share your pain.

My mother passed away at the age of 83 on 12/23/2018 after battling numerous issues since August. The final straw was a fall with 2 broken vertebrae and 15 days in hospice before she passed. Her service was the same day as your father's.

She was the nucleus of the family and we are all still in shock. I knew it would be hard but I had no idea how hard.

We will get through this!!!

Paul, I can't give you my word that this year will be better than last year, but I know that you will make this year better than last, and it is your wonderful spirit that will make it that way.

It sometimes the feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. It’s seems unfair that you suffer whilst everyone else celebrates the high life. These painful times will only ensure that when the good times come knocking you will appreciate every moment even more. Wishing you health and happiness for 2019.

My (almost) 103 yo Mum (I'm the only child) for whom I was Carer, died in early 2018.
The bloody stockmarket (a pox on you and all who sail on you!) has fluctuated and caused my Superannuation fund big grief all year.
I have had a series of health problems developed in 2018 that look like being ongoing.
I could go on.
But you know what - that is life - and it's better than being dead.
