Need advice as to whether DateJust is authentic

Hi all, I'm looking at purchasing my first Rolex and need advice as to whether this is an authentic piece.

I have provided as many photos as possible, please advise.

Thank you for your time!

Thanks David, that is very reassuring. It looks to be a good watch, in fine condition and not over polished etc.

Is there anything you would note particularly?

Looks ok.

Has the rotor been touching the plates at some stage?

Does it have service history?

Thanks all. Not sure if the rotor has been touching the plates. I’ve done some reading on this and it seems it may be a crude last minute finishing technique from the factory—there’s a thread on here about it but can’t post link as I’m new. Will inspect when I receive it. Do I need a special tool to open an oyster case? If so where can I get one?

Nothing wrong with the rotor - I see NO issue of rubbing.
Do not open it, watch is fine.
Wear it and enjoy - stop looking for issues
And yes, you need a special tool

Hi all, thanks for your input on this. I bought the watch and received it today—unfortunately the seller seems to have purposefully misrepresented the watches condition.

I've attached here an image of the bottom-left-hand lug which is badly chipped. You'll notice that this particular spot on the watch is conspicuously omitted from all of the photographs provided. The watch was listed as the case being in "mint" condition. It also applears to have been polished and has a gouge on the botom-right-hand side (right on the intersection between the brushed and polished surfaces (picture 2) that seems to have been attempted to be polished out.

I have contacted the seller who has become very hostile and insists that this is a "different watch to the one he sent" despite my providing a photograph of the serial number in the same photograph as the damage (luckily the two are right next to one-another).

I've lodged a request for a refund and return through both eBay and PayPal. Fingers crossed—does anyone have any experience with this?

This is the original listing for any interested:

ebay . com . au /itm/Rolex-Steel-DateJust-36mm-Ref-16200-Jubilee-Band-Complete-Set/223864220487?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid =p2057872.m2749.l2649

Op. The gouge on the bottom left lug is not present in your original post. The scuff is. 8th picture down.

However I can’t see it in any other shot. There is no guarantee that the same watch has been used for all shots.

Depending on price paid I would dictate weather I’d worry about it or not.

I think your being a bit anal here, at least you have got a genuine watch, knocks and scratches add character, if you wanted a new watch buy a new watch.

I wanted this watch. It was listed as being in mint condition, and specifically as having been kept by its owner in the box in the safe. I asked for details of any cosmetic damage and was told there was none—I don’t think I’m being unreasonable in thinking I’ll receive a watch in the condition it was described as being in.

Also I can’t afford a new watch. This watch was described very specifically to me as being in mint condition despite my careful questioning about its condition and ANY flaws. I also believe the damage was deliberately omitted from the pictures by the seller. I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to expect to get what you are made to believe you are buying.

Looks like the pix shown carefully exclude the lug area where the dent is?

If the watch was described as being in mint condition with no flaws then it was described incorrectly and I would return it to the seller.

The blemish on the case side can be seen in the pix but the dent on the lug in not visible to me in any of the pix?

That's how I feel—it seems that one lug has been very purposefully omitted from all of these images. Thanks for your help, I'm glad you reached the same conclusion I did. I really feel like I have been deceived by the seller as to the condition of the watch. I actually don't mind the dent on the side, but I was told the watch had not been polished and was not told about the chip on the lug.

The seller is being very difficult so I hope eBay or PayPal will see my point of view here.

Get a refund please. Very sad from the seller.

How is he being anal when the lug is damaged like that and it wasn't shown in the pictures. That's not normal damage, from regular wear and tear. The seller should have informed him.

Thanks for your support. I don’t think I’m being unreasonable either... I am very concerned as the seller immediately started calling ME a scammer and claiming I was showing him pictures of a different watch altogether. They haven’t replied since I removed the bracelet and took the picture showing the damage with the serial number.

Does anyone know how eBay and PayPal typically respond to cases like this?

They will try and get you to resolve it with the seller first.

Eventually they may intervene. Did you pay with a CC via PayPal? It may be easier to get a refund this way.

Yes I did. I’ve lodged a refund request with eBay and started a PayPal case. The seller has yet to respond to my image of the serial with the damage. What a nightmare. The seller was very accommodating up until this point and has now completely changed his tune. I don’t think I will be able to settle anything without intervention.

You are right to feel that you were deceived and I would return the watch and do as you have done. PayPal and eBay are very customer focused but it takes a minute for them to move through the process. Stick with it. Let us know how this plays out.

I’d keep and think myself lucky to get one with a full set easily fixed with a bit of elbow grease and a cape cod or similar

Unfortunately with any watch I ever bought used I was disappointed in the condition. There are good watches available at every price point. Saying Rolex on it doesn't make it the best option. For $3K or less you can get an Aqua Terra on bracelet, a modern watch with a superior movement to most of Rolex's.

Thanks Adam and all. I’ve bought numerous watches (Breitling, Omega) and been very happy with them. I knew what to expect, because the seller disclosed the condition truthfully. That is the issue here. I paid for a watch I was led to believe was in mint condition, which it is not. Will keep everyone up to date!

New people often have limited funds driving them to preowned but are not yet savvy enough to score a good deal without caveats.

If price point is a major concern there are excellent watches to be had in any budget brand new. That's my point.

Sounds like OP bought the watch and not the seller.

The seller is actually a jewelry store with 49 years experience in the industry, which is the only reason I believed it was truly mint. Here is the listing:

Understood. Then your money should be returned even though they were dishonest about the condition.

The good news is that $4500 USD or $7,400 AUD seems to be the going rate for a full set 36 mm DJ on jubilee. Bobs watches has silver, black, and blue in stock.

David SW has some DJ36 options around $5K usd also including a more modern reference white stick dial. Good luck. You have several layers of protection. You'll be fine.

As I previously posted a pix of the damaged area had been left out of the pix in the advert.

Now I know where the damage is I can see a slight variation on the lug line in the first pix but would never have expected it to be as bad as it was.

The seller tried a fast one and should be held to account.

I didn’t know about this jeweller in Oz and now I don’t want to.
