Apple Vision Pro

The more I think about it the more I think Apple is going to have a hit with the Vision Pro. So many way to implement this technology outside of sitting in a chair and playing games or watching a movie.

Creators that need multiple high res monitors? This would be pretty cool alternative.

Businesses that spend a bunch of money sending techs out to service intricate devices? This could be a great tool and terrific customer service enhancer. The medical device field alone would really benefit from this.

On a long flight (used in conjunction with a power bank because 2 hours of battery life ain’t gonna cut it ) could be an awesome screaming baby antidote.

We need to upgrade our TV. Instead of spending $$$ on that perhaps “spatial computing“ is the next thing.

I know that the price of $3500 is definitely a barrier to most but then again what might happen if a few “influencers” make this the next hot thing?

Social media had made the @Fujifilm X100V such a hot item that you have to get on a waiting list for one or pay over MSRP for a used one. That is for a fixed lens camera! Admittedly one of the best looking cameras you can buy and a pleasure to use but just sayin’

Apple has downplayed the forecasted sales for the Vision Pro. IIRC it was something like 900,000 units which is very low for an Apple device.

That might be too low.

Then again I am a huge Apple fanboi so take these ramblings with a grain of salt.

Historically betting against Apple is not a winning proposition.

Remember the declaration by Steve Ballmer when the iPhone was launched?

"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share," Ballmer told USA Today in April of 2007. No chance. It's a $500 subsidized item. They may make a lot of money. But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get."

Oopsie.

I think you are correct. I personally think it is going to be a monster hit.

and I think this is just the beginning.

once it takes hold, it is going to take over.

anyone seen Ready Player One?

Between that and Terminator with AI, it is only a matter of time before we are all stuck in the Matrix.

I am glad I am on the latter side of my life. I say this in all seriousness, I simply see technology taking over in the next 30 years. Likely faster.

Despite it was inspired by the Rebel's eyewear from Hoth, I like the look, so I'm really interesting about it. However what I'm mostly curious is about how it will be able to black out the background for the movies or the multiple computer displays.

I don't believe that it would be a huge hit just because it won't be produced in huge numbers IMHO. This is just a first release, to sparkle interest and create a market, in the next few years we will see what the consumers think.

With that said, I think that it looks great and that it has a lot of potential. I'm not sure about the size and the cord-in-the-pants battery but I'm sure that at least the second problem is just a technological issue that will be undoubtedly fixed in the next few years.

The funny thing is, this is old old news. Google did Google glass years ago that did a lot of the same things. Google Glass failed because it was so far ahead of its time and people were not ready for people wearing cameras. Now everyone has a camera.

Apple is usually very good at stepping into a sector, taking what others have done, and then making it better. Apple should have focused on the design of the actual glasses first. I think the technology is great but asking people to wear a huge, clunky, headset is dead on arrival for the majority.

If Apple can get its headset into a Google Glass form factor (maybe not the look), then they will have something amazing.

Time will tell.

Am I the only one who doesn’t want to wear something this cumbersome on my head?

I think the forum factor is the major draw back

When you put it in the RP1 perspective, yes, even into the Disney plus option as to be immersed into a movie. Or go to a Tony Stark scene and be able to throw windows around while browsing or working. The possibilities are endless. However, there is the one issue, you can’t get a good cheeseburger in the VR realm.

I dont think it will be the massive hit they are hoping for.
Aside from the price, I feel the VAST majority of people are hesitant to wear such a device over their eyes. I'm sure someone more educated than myself can speak to some fundamental, instinctive human aversion to having our "natural" vision blocked for any significant period of time.
I think of other "headsets" that haven't taken off as their creators had hoped. (Oculus Rift, Google Glass, Google Daydream, HoloLens, MagicLeap, Meta Quest, HTC Vive)

Personally, I'm not a fan of further removing our already largely disconnected society from reality. Just an opinion.

No, you're not the only one. But I think this is different than what we've seen before. First, it's going to be more comfortable. Second, it blends the real world with the virtual world. Third, I could see this replacing a tv for a lot of people. Not immediately, but down the road. With this, you could basically watch TV or a movie anywhere.

I can see some of that but honestly I don't see it replacing TV.

Imagine sitting around with a group of friends watching a game with these on ... or even two people watching a movie together....

Maybe, I guess, but I'm not sure what it looks like trying to interact with fellow TV watchers while all wearing goggles

Absolutely. There is a HUGE social element to watching TV at times, especially if you got a bunch of friends coming over to watch a big game.

But for some folks, I could see it being a solution. Late at night, if nobody is around, you might want to find a seat in the corner of the room and watch a movie or something.

It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. With a low forecast of 900,000 units obviously Apple isn’t predicting one in every living room.

I think the industrial applications are going to be huge. My field was ophthalmic imaging and treatment devices.

If I were in my old job I’d be going straight to the forward thinking surgeons and pitching the telemedicine potential applications. Specialists could assist in remote areas far better than they can with existing telemedicine technologies.

I’d also be getting the Tech Support management team on board because there is a profound lack of highly trained field techs. Shipping one of these to a system like Kaiser could create so much increased uptime with lower costs it would be staggering.

When Boeing outsourced assembly all over the place they lost a lot of tribal knowledge. They could have used something like this to make the transition much less painful by getting the guys who really knew what time it was to consult real time.

It’s exciting!

I will be getting the Gen.3 model in 2027 after the bugs are worked out and the app ecosystem has fully adopted it. Or it has died a Lisa Newton death (look those up if you know Apple History).

VPUs are the real breakthrough to me (Visual Processing Units).

EMFs have been cited as a form of carcinogen — in previous studies. So that gives some time to see if I need to wear a tinfoil hat while using it. That should amp up the geek factor 10x…

The Lab Rats loved the nacho cheesy flavored MobileComm and Nvidia chips connected to the centrifugal fans in their cages until they began passing out…

Apple gave me mine in hopes of an adoption curve. It’s somewhere here in its leather “never ready” case too.

Lol… my dumb azz bought it all - the leather case, the extra cards etc. thinking it would replace my leather Daytimer style notebook.

Could never train the handwriting recognition properly.

Must have been really fun to have had a connection with Apple back in the day. Cheers!

Apple Vision Pro

They also let us buy Lisa’s at 38% of MSRP (which was at a ridiculous $10k price with full memory). We resold DECwriters, IBM Sys36’s, and the WANs to knit them together before the web disinter-mediated the Comm’s & Telco’s.

Then, the year after that, Apple did the first Mac at under $2k.

Steve was a master manipulator.

Fun times…

The price will limit it to the 1%. Still a lot of people, but I predict it's a flop (at that price).

Rather pull my bike out the garage

Read the reviews & all seem v positive. Sure once it’s priced correctly- the younger crowd will snap it up

Adult apps should do well here. They're great at early adopting and using special features too such as linking other devices.

Could also use AR to help Boeing PROPERLY build aircraft, train employees, etc.

Virtual watch try-on for customers? Hmm... Could be a big hit for Rolex ADs inviting their customers to come in to "try on" the new models, see them on the wrist.

You are 100% correct.

What I liked the most about the announcement was that they didn't make a big deal about gaming, which has historically been one of Apple's Achilles heel. Instead they focused on purposeful features such as communication, and office work.

I think it's going to be a revolutionary product not only because of its specs, but also its approach to mixed reality and its applications.

Also, the name... Vision Pro. Which makes me believe there will be a non-Pro version at some point in the future.

They'll squeeze some cash out of the early adopters, then release the same tech but slightly watered down and less comfortable for less money when version 2 of the pro model is released. We are in the iPhone X phase now. Sometime we will see the SE version of this thing.

That is a bit cynical, yet fairly accurate representation of Apple products in general, but also just about any new product or technology.

In 2007, no one could even name a phone that would sell for $1,000. Now you couldn't even give away a $300 to anyone.
